Unlock 4.0: The Bus Travel Demand Supply Conundrum

According to a Demand Supply Conundrum report by Abhibus, the demand for interstate travel has seen a spike over the last few weeks, as the lockdown is being lifted in various parts of the country.

However, on the supply side, there is a shortage of buses on most routes operated by various regional transport company's (RTC). Private operators have also opened up routes despite incurring losses, but social distancing norms are impacting the inventory of seats.

As per the report, the top 5 most searched cities by volume are Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Goa. Chennai has seen 6 lakh weekly searches with Bangalore-Chennai and Hyderabad-Chennai each accounting for 3 lakh weekly searches.

Hyderabad was also among the top searched destinations. Vijayawada-Hyderabad (1.25 lakh), Vizag-Hyderabad (90,000), Bangalore-Hyderabad (1.60 lakh) were among the top searched routes.

Delhi-NCR registered 5 lakh weekly searches mostly from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Some of the top routes that people searched for included Ludhiana-Delhi (62,000), Amritsar-Delhi (88,000), Chandigarh-Delhi (95,000), Lucknow-NCR (37,000) and Kanpur-NCR (18,000).

Mumbai had about 2 lakh weekly searches mostly from outside Maharashtra. Hyderabad-Mumbai, Bangalore-Mumbai, Goa-Mumbai, Indore-Mumbai, Ahmedabad-Mumbai were the top searched routes.

Goa was among the top searched destinations with over 2.5 lakh searches a week, mostly from Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore.
