Vehicles to get High Security Plates at sale from April 2019

According to a media report, all new vehicles will come fitted with high security registration plates (HSRP) at the time of sale from April 2019. These will be provided by automobile manufacturers with the vehicles. Dealers will be responsible for fitting them to the vehicles before delivery.

HSRPs will come with a 5-year guarantee and their cost will be included in the vehicle cost. All plates will be linked to the government's Vaahan database.

In addition to the license plates, vehicle manufacturers will also provide the third registration mark. This will be a chromium-based hologram sticker for the windshield that will have colour coding for the fuel used in the vehicle, details of the registering authority, registration number, laser-branded permanent number as well as engine and chassis number.

Back in April 2018, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued draft rules mandating manufacturers to provide HSRPs. However, the Association of Registration Plates Manufacturers of India have said that they will be challenging the decision in the Supreme Court.
