Volkswagen reveals details of 10-speed DSG

German carmaker, Volkswagen has announced that it is readying a new 10-speed, Direct-shift gearbox (DSG), which is likely to be used in its future vehicles. The gearbox will be the successor to the 6-speed unit that is being used in the company's more powerful models. It is likely to be used with both transverse and longitudinal engines layouts.

The 10-speed gearbox is said to be able to handle torque loads of up to 369 lb ft (500 Nm). It has been termed as a key development in Volkswagen's goal to improve the efficiency of its cars by 15 per cent by the year 2020. However, there is no indication as to when the new gearbox will be introduced.

Volkswagen has also confirmed a new 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel engine that will produce 236 bhp. This engine will be offered in the eighth-generation Passat sedan.
