Volvo XC40 gets 5-stars in Euro NCAP

The Volvo XC40 has received a 5-star safety rating in the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) crash tests. The XC40 scored 97% for adult occupant safety and 87% for child safety. It scored 71% in the pedestrian safety tests and 76% for its safety assist features.

According to Euro NCAP, the XC40's passenger compartment remains stable in the frontal offset test and offers good protection to its occupants. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of both the front occupants was found to be good, while rear passenger chest protection was rated as marginal. The SUV secured the maximum points in the side barrier test and the side pole test. The seats and headrests offered good protection against whiplash injuries.

The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) performed as expected in city conditions. In the case of pedestrian safety, the bonnet and front bumper offered good protection to the pedestrian. However, the stiff A-pillars offered poor protection. The AEB performed well in the daytime while detecting a pedestrian and a cyclist. However, in darkness, the system was weak in tests where a pedestrian crossed the path of the car.

The car used for the evaluation was an XC40 D4 variant powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine. This rating applies for both LHD and RHD cars powered by a 1.5-litre petrol, 2.0-litre petrol, and a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The car comes equipped with front, knee and side airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, a seatbelt reminder and ISOFIX child seat mounts. It also gets a lane assist system.
