Volkswagen and Audi have been hit by a data breach, exposing details of over 3 million customers.

According to a media report, Volkswagen & Audi have been hit by a data breach and contact information and other details of their customers have been exposed.

The report suggests that more than 3 million customers or shoppers in the United States and Canada have been affected by the breach. Customer details including phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses and even vehicle identification numbers have been exposed. In some cases, customers' driving licence numbers and social security numbers have been breached as well.

According to Volkswagen USA, the breach also includes data of potential customers, who had merely inquired about purchasing either an Audi or Volkswagen vehicle.

The data is said to have been stolen by an outside vendor used by VW, Audi and their respective dealers. The data had been collected between 2014 and 2019 for marketing purposes. The report states that Volkswagen and Audi have already reached out to around 90,000 customers, especially those who had shared sensitive details.
