VW to increase localization of 1.5L TDI engine

One of Volkswagen’s biggest banes in the Indian car market has been poor localization levels. The brand has been targeting improved local sourcing to tackle this issue, and according to a recent report, VW is expanding the localization of its 1.5L TDI engine.

Under phase two of the engine localization program, more vendors are being selected to source 15 crucial components of the 1.5L diesel engine. Under phase one of the plan, VW sources 25 major components such as the turbocharger, connecting rods, vacuum lines, flywheels and engine brackets from 18 local suppliers. These suppliers were shortlisted after VW considered nearly 35 vendors during the bidding process. Existing suppliers include Sansara Engineering and Honeywell Turbo Technologies India among others.

VW’s new engine testing and assembly facility in Chakan, Pune has been developed to produce the 1.5L TDI engine. The engine testing facility includes a cold test station, a hot test bench and an engine dynamometer besides an engine test laboratory. The plant in Pune manufactures the Volkswagen Polo, Vento and the Skoda Rapid, all of which are powered by the 1.5L TDI engine.
