VW stops production of Polo GT TSI, TDI; facelift coming?

German carmaker, Volkswagen has stopped production of the GT TSI and TDI variants of the Polo hatchback. The development does not come as a surprise as the launch of the Polo facelift is expected to be just around the corner.

The GT TSI and TDI variants, which sat at the top of the Polo range, appealed to customers looking for an added dose of performance. The TSI came with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine which developed 104 bhp @ 5000 rpm and 175 Nm of torque @ 1500-1400 rpm. While this engine made the GT TSI a desirable hot hatch with its performance, the car's 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission made it easy to drive in city traffic as well.

The TDI featured a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that produced 104 bhp @ 4400 rpm and 250 Nm of torque @ 1500-2500 rpm. The car had a 5-speed manual gearbox and offered a blend of performance and economy.

While Volkswagen has not revealed the launch date of the Polo facelift, media speculation suggests it could be as early as July. The car will feature cosmetic changes to its exterior and interior and is likely to be offered with a choice of three engines - 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol, 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol (TSI) and a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel. The diesel engine is expected to be offered in 89 bhp and 104 bhp (GT TDI) states of tune.
