Yamaha evaluating electric 2-wheelers for India

Yasuo Ishihara, MD, Yamaha Motor Research & Development India has told the media that the Japanese bike maker is conducting a feasibility study to evaluate the possibility of launching electric 2-wheelers in India.

Yamaha is also studying the possibility of electric vehicles (EVs) replacing traditional internal combustion (IC) engines altogether. However, Ishihara believes that there is still a long way to go before EVs can completely take over the market and hence Yamaha will continue to develop IC engines in order to make them more efficient.

Yamaha is also looking into the possibility of investing into the production of power units and batteries for the EVs. The company is also keen to work with partners to develop the necessary infrastructure.

2-wheeler manufacturers in the country have been responding to the government’s call to replace all fossil fuel powered vehicles with EVs by 2030. TVS Motor recently bought stake in Bangalore-based EV start-up Ultraviolette Automotive, while Bajaj Auto has announced that it will launch an EV sub-brand by 2020.
