Udupi Offroaders go nuts in the rain, again...

It has been raining like crazy since last week. The local newspapers are reporting floods everywhere. This is the time to go offroading...

So, today afternoon I called Sachin wondering why we are not planning something. And he says he was about to call me, and we are going out...

How does it feel to offroad in heavy rain? This is how... click and see it in full size.

But it doesn't even begin to describe how it feels to be that place.

This is how we started off. We took three DI powered MM550s and go to a place 5kms away from my home.

Then we entered the pond that we have crossed last year.

We all went through it couple of times, make some new offroaders do it too. But nothing new here, so we moved on to the next site.

Then we found another new temporary pond whose depth was unknown. And it started raining very hard.

The bottom of this little temporary pond was not very firm. When we were driving through it, we could feel the wheels slipping in the slush. It was only via constant momentum and cool heads we made it through.

Then others wanted to show me a place where they got stuck for 8 hours on a previous occasion. It was raining heavily again and we followed our snake expert (Jeep with the name Rescuer). But we started going in circles once we got into a big green ground filled with 3 inches of water. He was unwilling get out of the field. It was some wonderful stretch to drive, but no chance of shooting video/photo since I was driving.

Finally we continued and reached an small island by driving across another local stream.

So we checked out the place, but it was quite tame this time.

In 4L, 2nd gear.

In 4L, 1st gear for more challenge. Still too easy.

So we come back from that island and are all ready to leave.

But there was a stretch of water on the mud trail, and some couldn't resist it.

I was quite satisfied just shooting the pics and videos this time.

The parting shots...

The best way is to put in 2WD mode and then let the wheels slip. Once in reverse, once forward. Then gun it in with wheelspin. This usually makes simple obstacles tough.

Other way is to get a tank like the Safari. Once a Safari goes over an easy trail, nothing else can.

I remember, at my first NIOC OTR, there was this mid level obstacle. I gunned it in 2nd low, and after some drama took it. A pajero behind me could do it.

After that none of the jeeps with experienced offroaders(but no lockers or no big tires) could do it because two SUVs had destroyed the trail

Ugh, we don't do that, this is a 4WD event. You are missing the purpose of doing it in 1st gear. When you climb in 2nd gear, you are helped by the momentum. By switching to 1st, you are giving up momentum. Takes more skill to pull it off.

By switching to 2WD, you are giving up the advantage of 4WD. We didn't get into this sports for that.

The rains, the greenery and those jeeps just look so good together! Just one question - Do you take visitors on such fabulous sojourns?

cheers!

Yes, visitors always outnumber the drivers. Last time some BHPians got to drive our Jeeps.

Neither. It is a lake, not a river.

The Cooper Discoverer AT3? Gotta confess, I really know nothing about that tyre. He got it pretty recently I think.

Thats a beautiful hard top can you share the cost details and from where it can be sourced, please. I am talking about the jeep with the army camouflage on the bonnet.

It was built at the same Udupi workshop where all our Jeeps are restored and maintained. Since it was not externally sourced, price information will be difficult to reveal. It was done along with the complete restoration of the Jeep.
