HELP! - Amplifier switching off

My Sony 4 channel amp switches off after a few minutes. If I switch off the HU & switch it back on immediately, the amp comes to life for 2 seconds & goes to sleep. Sometimes it works for 5-10 minutes before going to sleep again. What could be the issue here ? I have checked the wire from the battery terminal, seems ok.

Hi EL,
As a basic workaround, check your power cables at both battery and amp end. Also check remote wire (the one used to switch on the amp when HU is turned on) at both HU end and amp end. I am saying this because, during my DIY I have experienced a loose / cut connection once and amp powering off.

I think remote signal is having problem or amp is going to protect mode,to confirm you can connect a wire from power supply to remote terminal at the amp with a diode in series and check the amp goes to sleep mode. If it goes sleep amp has some problem otherwise there is some issue with remote.

Thermal protection acting - the amp must be overheating. When you switch off and then on immediately, it works for 2 seconds - but switches off again since it has not cooled down enough.

1. Check if any of the speaker terminals / wires are shorting (with each other or ground; check with multimeter, with amp off)
2. Check air circulation around amp

Thank you guys.
The air circulation is ok since it has been running in that place for more than 2 years now. Amp is installed under the front passenger seat.
I will check with the point no.1, i fear that may be the reason. I hope there would be no damages.

Like Deralte Phaji suggested check the speaker wires. They would be the major culprit in this tripping. Since you have check the power cable. Check the ground cable also. It might have come loose.

There can be a case of dry solder also. If rechecking the wiring does not solve the problem get the amp checked.

I fear the same since i hear some scrappy sound from the components sometimes. The door pad has been opened & refitted quite unprofessionally a couple of times. Thanks

There should be some light indicating if the amp goes into the protection mode. If it goes into the protection mode, then it might be the issue with the speaker wires.

If it does not go into protection mode, but switches off(No power), then check
1.Remote wire
2.Power wire
3.Ground wire
in that order.

Do you have a multimeter? If yes do a simple test and check input voltage in Amp.keep a close look at it and see what happens when it switches off,do you see any change in Voltage? Many other things I can write if you know basis electronics else you may totally burnout your blackbox-Let me know if you have basic knowledge(PM me if that is the case).

It was placed underseat and hence maybe rca or speaker wires got look thanks to occasional stamps from passenger or as DerAlte etc said.

Why not DIY and find the cause? one set at a time. Unscrew a speaker and play music and see. Repeat.

i was also facing the same problem then after all that r n d
if found then one of cell in my battery was weak and the battery was not able to get charge as fast as discharge rate hence battery can bare the load of the amp for small duration.so amp gets switch off when there is no minimum voltage to run the amp.try connecting another battery from your friend car and see, if clicks change the battery.

Even if all connections etc are okay, it sometimes happens to Sony amps, they just give up, so try getting the amp checked by some good technician if everything seems all right in the vehicle.

its all because or overheating. If all the connections are correct then the amp is gettin old and caps inside of amp needs to be changed!

Thanks everyone for your inputs. My car seems to have some electrical problem somewhere. My PWs suddenly cease to work & come back after a while, same is the case with the low beam. So i have removed the face plate of my HU & kept it at home until I find time to resolve these issues. Will get an update as soon as I fix them.
cheers
