Amplifier+Speakers+IPod=Music?

Hi all,
I would like to know if a setup of just an amplifier,a set of speakers and an Ipod or any self powered source with a normal out can be setup in a car or vehicle without a Head Unit.

My idea is to power the speakers through the amp,and the input to amp will by directly connected to the Ipod.

Is this a workable idea and will i be able to listen to the audio without frying my Ipod or Amp.

Awaiting your replies and suggestions.This thread could help a lot of us who mainly use the Ipod and not even the cd player or even those who use a mobile dvd player could just plug in the output sound to the amp and watch using the existing screen.
