This PC would remain on nearly 12-15 hours a day, specifically serving as torrent downloader and a media server for networked users. I used to use 7 year machine to do the job till now. However it went kaput last weekend.

My requirements are

a) Mother board / CPU
b) Power Supply
c) RAM
d) HDD

The cabinet will be placed in a secluded corner about 6" from the wall.

a) Mother board / CPU -
Intel Atom Motherboard Combo D2500HN- 5k
- Dual Core, Very Low Power Consumption(10W), FAN less, has Gigabit Lan
b) Power Supply - ITX - As per your budget
Iball/ Antec/CoolerMaster
c) RAM - 2GB DDR3 - Rs.700 (kingston/crossair)
d) HDD. - 1 TB SATA Seagate/wd - 4k

This would be more than sufficient config for a seedbox/nas.
It can stay on round the clock.no problem.

You can also look at Dual Core G645 (65W) but it is not fan-less & has higher power consumption.

Re: Help with Computer Config

Guys,

Computer gurus, please help. My comp just failed sometime back. Its very ancient anyway, so Iam not going to bother repairing it.

I need a simple new cpu for home use,
Requirements
1) Storing my media like music in lossless format, movies etc.
2) For torrent downloads
3) Iam Not going to play any games.
4)I want fast connectivity options like usb 3.0.
5)As future proof as possible.

Lastly, if possible, I want the cabinet to be placed horizontally on the table. like the ones sleeping on the desk. Not the vertical kind.

My budget for cpu alone is 20,000 max.

Thanks

Thanks a lot man. Very specific and clean, you made my job a lot easier.
Also, about the cabinet, I asked around and the local computer guys are saying "those are failure models saar" and all that.
Do any of the cabinet makers still make the horizontal ones ?

Cheers

Nothing like failure , just that they are not in demand.

Thanks k2max6, would intel atom be capable of running long hours without causing burn out, even with poor ventilation.

With the help of my office IT guys, I checked that my processor (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5Ghz) is still fine any working. Can I simple buy M/B, RAM, HDD & power supply and will that work.

If so what M/B should I be looking for?

Since you already have a superior processor, no point in buying the atom. You can buy any motherboard with the LGA775 socket.
You can buy the G41 chipset like Gigabyte GA-G41M Motherboard. Its supports DDR3 RAM as well.

Re: Help with Computer Config

Hi K2max6 !
I took your configuration as base and did a little research. These are the prices i got from the local market. Please let me know if they are ok? Compared to the prices you mentioned this fellow seems to be expensive. What do you think?

Intel i3 3220(3rd gen) - Rs7400

Gigabyte GAB75M -Rs4200

Corsair Vengeance 4gb DDR3 1600Mhz -Rs1420

1 tb WD green caviar
64mb cache/6.0 Gbps interface -Rs 4400

LG/Samsung DVD RW -Rs950

Cooler master elite 361 -Rs2400
Cooler Master 500W PSU- Rs3200

Total: Rs 23970 !

And 1 noob question.
The cooler master spec says 2*USB 2.0 in the front. Does that mean that the usb 3.0 ports will work only from the back or can the provision be made for the front side?

Thanks

Add 4% tax to the prices mentioned here. These are the lowest prices available in Delhi. You can accordingly decide.

Yes USB 3.0 will work from the back only

Re: Help with Computer Config

hi friends
I want to purchase 2 graphic cards one for me and other for my wifes brother.
The configurations are as below.

My pc
PROC > AMD Athlon X2 3800+ (2.1 ghz)
MB > ASUS M2N68 AM SE2 with MCP68 SE chipset (with nvidia GeForce 7025 graphics).
RAM > 3 (2+1) gb of DDR 2 667 speed
Monitor LG M237wa TV cum Monitor with 2 HDMI 1DVI 1 Dsub and other connections .
SMPS is 400 w VIP i think.
160 gb hdd and also recently purchased 1 tb seagate go flex external hdd.(may give it to BIL if wireless external HDD is bought, is it useful.)
wifi router ASUSRT N13U
speakers are Altec Lansing 3251 5.1 surround

My almost 6 year old 256 MB HIS 7600 GS card died. Now my query is shall new cards of DX 10 or 11 shall work on it. I generally do not play games on it but I do not want to burden processor with graphic task as it quite old (nearly 6 year old).
If yes which card (1 GB is more than enough i think) with minimum chipset should buy to play games lik NFS at low settings. I am open to ATI as well as NVIDIA card. .

Now my brother in laws pc configuration.
PROC > Intel core 2 duo E7300 2.66 ghz
MB Intel DG31PR
RAM > 2 GB DDR2 800 mhz ( is adding another 2 GB)
SMPS must be 400 w
LG CRT 19 inch.
basic stereo speakers.
80 gb hdd.

He want to play games like NFS, Hitman, MAXPAYNE etc. He is stydying Engg. Please suggest card for him accordingly.

I am thinking of NVIDIA GTX 550 TI for price around 7k should be sufficient for brother in law..

For me between 4 to 5 k rupees what do u suggest. What do you think about GT630 with DDR3 memory.

P.S. I do not want to upgrade my pc as 2 years back i have changed motherboard and it is doing well.
also price to performance ratio to be considered.

Re: Help with Computer Config

If i want to assemble a new pc for home, is it advisable to go for AMD based system since its entry level processors are value for money. AMD seems to have not doing well since last year.
Also can anybody answer my query in previous post.
Thanks.

For you-
Your motherboard already has good integrated graphics nvidia7200. You won't burden the cpu at all. Buying a graphics card is a no brainer since you won't be playing any games.Even if you want you can play max payne 1 , nfs most wanted etc.. they would play fine on your system.

For your BIL-
I suppose its 19" LCD ? if not then I would recommend spending on an led/lcd screen for his pc first because the resolution that the graphics card would provide can't be applied on a crt.
As for the card you can go for ati5450 2gb ddr3 if he wants to play medium games.2.7k
For top of the line games ati7750 would be good.7k
80 gb would fall short for more than 3 games.( those trending these days)

What is the budget you are looking at?
Though i would go with intel anyday.

Re: Help with Computer Config

Thanks a lot k2max6 for detailed reply.
My system had slowed over the time but couple of days back i formatted and reserved 40 gb to c drive instead of 20 gb. Now I am not going to upgrade my system. That is power of TeamBHP.

BIL has CRT monitor. And as suggested by you an LCD monitor is now coming. The card you mentioned for BIL i.e. ATI 5450 also came to my mind but i thought it would struggle for medium settings. My another query would his rig be able to use 2 gb card effectively or a faster but 1gb card would perform better. I would go with 6450 2gb card though preferably ASUS brand.
For monitor now I shall do some research.
By the way which one would you suggest in 20-22 inch monitor. HDMI connection should be standard i suppose with DVI and DSUB.
Thanks once agains
Sanjay.

Re: Help with Computer Config

My system is a Dec 2008 assembled PC
Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
Gigabyte S3 mainboard
4 GB DDR2 RAM
Corsair TX650 PSU
nVidia 9800GTX+ GPU (also called GT250 or GTS250 later)
22" LCD
WinXP 32 bit (so not much to gain increasing RAM)

I am thinking of upgrading the GPU, which GPU in 10-15k INR range would you suggest, essentially a mid-range GPU that can play more recent games (I have Far Cry 3) in mind at less than maxed out settings ? I have no hangups about ATi, but many people report ATI cards tend to be less stable/have compatibility/driver issues more often. Since the system is all ok for general use, I intend to upgrade only GPU now, maybe do full system upgrade late next year.

I would suggest the GTX 560Ti in 10-15k range.

However, be warned that your processor will heavily bottleneck the 560ti and would not be able to utilize even 50-60% of the GPU's full performance in some games. When you upgrade to an Intel iX series or better rig, the performance jump will be huge.
