Laptop Crashed, in deep trouble (MAC user)

Dear All,

I'm in the worst situation a man could be in. Hard Disk failed and no back up. In that hard disk are all my pictures and all my work. Work can be redone, pictures cannot be reshot.

This also includes all my travelogue photos and photos of me driving that BMW M3.

The laptop is my trusty Powerbook G4.

I've sent it to the apple service centre, who has just informed me that the partition has failed. (?)

Now comes the problem of data recovery. Remember that the HDD is neither FAT32 nor NTFS it is MAC OS Journaled and cannot be read by a windows computer.
Does anybody know anyone who can recover data off a Mac HDD. At any cost?

I cannot stress to you what a massive loss this is going to be.

I have no idea how good they are, but I got the name from a friend:

Recover Data
404, C-Wing, Eastern Court,
Vile Parle (East) Mumbai - 400057, India.
Helpline : +91-9910898881

Data Recovery Mac. Macintosh Data Recovery. Recover HFS, HFS+ Volumes

PS: My sympathies are with you - I lost the HD on my official windows notebook last week and have been trying to put together pieces from a slightly older backup.

I'll try it. Just spoke to the engineer he is recommending I give it to a recovery expert. I'm unsure if they recover disks with MAC formatting.

Slightly off topic - If you buy a Mac from the states with the extended warranty (worldwide) is it valid in India? Anyone got their machines fixed for free under this here?

Sam,

Why don't you ask the apple service center to recommend someone? This would surely not be the first time they have seen something like this, and their lead would be trust-worthy.

Also, get a second hard-disk right away alongwith a copy of Second Copy. Been a life saver to me twice over.

Not sure if this is the right answer, but someone I know got a Windows laptop from the Gulf, with warranty, but the warranty was not accepted in India.

Very sorry to hear about the mishap, Sam.
I gather that the photos are the most precious cargo aboard. These, fortunately, are amongst the easiest data to recover.
There is a good chance the recovery from your failed HDD will be near complete, since your HDD has not suffered catastrophic mechanical failure.

Oh my goodness! Now, That's a tragedy.
An expert data recovery is the solution. I don't know anybody in Mumbai. But will call up my Bangalore company and find out as they have some good people for the job.
Will see you in a day or 2.
