Re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2013. EDIT : Ford EcoSport it is!

Ironically, getting the COTY doesn't mean the model would do well forever. I guess we vote with our heart and buy with the brain

Looking at the top contenders from previous TBHP COTY awards and where they stand when it comes to sales numbers.

I'm taking only the models that got at least 10% votes in the poll.

Congrats to EcoSport though I voted for the Amaze.

This time too, we have a clear winner with over 50% votes. But the voters have reduced from 2122 and 2626 in the last couple of years, to 1362 this year till now.

Managing to get more than 50% of the total votes, Ecosport shows why its so good. IMO it was the most anticipated launch of the year & it gave the market(which till date has immense demand for SUVs) a true alternative to the overpriced Duster. Ecosport deserves the TeamBHP COTY.

Main reason = We chose NOT to send out a Mass PM to our entire memberbase this year.

Not sure if anyone noticed but the last page of today's TOI features a full-page ad of the Ecosport and the awards it has garnered including the several COTYs. Was happy to see Team-BHP on the list.

Here's the image from the e-paper:

Re: Team-BHP Car of the Year, 2013. EDIT : Ford EcoSport it is!

Coming to the standards of the past 4-5 years, from Nano, Figo, XUV500, Duster, and Ecosport, none of the launches this year have that excitement for me. Pardon my ignorance, I have zilch idea for the luxury segments. I mean none of the launches this year, the south side of 20 lakhs, have appealed me much. The best ones on top of my mind are Ciaz, Scorpio and Zest. I don't see too many contenders. Though there have been fresh launches like Celerio and Xest too, I am not too excited this year. If hard pressed, I may vote for Ciaz though I think "None of the above (NOTA)" should be given as an option. In that case, NOTA gets my vote.

Here are the sub-20L cars that come to my mind, which is not a small list.

New launches: Zest, Ciaz, Celerio, Mobilio, Xcent, Alto K10, Go

Major refreshes: Elite i20, Corolla Altis, Scorpio, City, Punto Evo

The list is definitely not dry and the fact that we may not have a clear winner is a good thing. Otherwise, what is the point in such a poll?

The winner was quite clear even before we started the poll during the last couple of years but that is the scenario I actually don't like when it comes to a poll which is just a namesake process.

Couple of other cars are Fiat Avventura(New Launch), Fiat Linea(Refresh).

I agree with you that the last three years the winner was almost clear with the first 50 itself, and would really not mind if there is a lot of swing-song as the votes keep pooling in. However, it is not the case this year that we are having competition between XUV500 vs Duster vs Ecosport vs Nano, at least the way I look at it. Talking about the new launches, here are some of my observations.

Zest: A well rounded car albeit a bit too late in the day for Tata. I am aware that it looks the best of all the sedans under 4 meters segment. Ideally, a car like Zest should end up at 3rd position and not 1st.
Ciaz: A great car which is hugely under powered, at least for the diesel variant.
Celerio: A decent 1 liter and coupled with the automatic option, it makes a compelling case though from my perspective it should be ranked between 7-8.
Mobilio: An I-too-can-join 5+2 segment utility vehicle. It borrows too heavily from the Brio-Amaze family, both interiors and exteriors too. Moreover, it iss perceived to be expensive by nearly a lakh rupees.
Xcent: I don't like to call any car as ugly because looks are the most subjective ones. Xcent is definitely not ugly. However, it is too much plane jane and could have been made really better. The engine options are also on expected lines and does not have the X-factor.
Alto K10 I am not sure it would have been in the competition if not for the automatic option. However, if A-Star was not replaced with Celerio with the automatic option, this small car would have been more talk of the town.
Go With the global NCAP asking this car to GO, I am not sure how many team-bhpians would be really picking this car as the "COY".

Aventura, Etior Cross, etc are great, but I am looking at the X-factor. It almost looks like any of the 5 previous COY could walk into this competition and hands down win comfortably. In short, we are certainly not looking at XUV500 vs Duster vs Ecosport scenario at all.

I guess we can expect the COTY 2014 any time around.

Eagerly looking forward for the vote.
