Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)-bmw2ercabrio1200x80032f72e4ff8a849ba.jpg

i5 will be a plug in hybrid model.

The car will be 3 series sized but designed to be with more interior space.

The electric motor in combination with the gasoline engine is expected to make aprox. 400 hp

Expected to launch by mid 2019.

Re: Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)

BMW CEO Harald Krueger has confirmed a third model in the i Range;

No further technical details are available at the moment, but Krueger hinted the machine will be "bigger than the BMW i3".

So IMO the i5 seems to have been green lighted

The model s is way more powerful than that. I think this will be competing on the price. And mid 2019 is a long time away by that time Tesla should be close to launching their 'cheap' car.

Re: Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)

BMW i5 rumored to be a crossover.

With the crossover segment booming this could be just the car BMW has in mind considering also the Chinese demand for SUV's.

Quote:
BMW would put its own twist on things with the same sort of advanced tech seen in the i3 and i8, plus the latest in autonomous driving and connectivity features. So expect low-weight carbon fibre to feature heavily alongside all-electric power, with a range well in excess of 200 miles.

Re: Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)

In my opinion, the government should help promote the use of electric vehicles. They should provide benefits for:
1) Manufacturing the electric vehicles, so that cost can be kept under control. Mahindra e2o is a perfect example of wrong costing.
2) Charging points at various public places

Without, such help from the government, these cars would remain mostly in the showrooms or with only a handful of ridiculously rich people who will use them as status symbols.
We need to have more such vehicles on the road if we wish lower the emissions and pollutants.

New 2018 BMW 3 Series to feature all-electric version to rival Tesla.

Quote:
The next-generation 3 Series, codenamed G20, gets a switch of chassis technology as the car leaves its existing platform and moves to an all-new architecture called CLAR, for Cluster Architecture. CLAR brought in carbon-fibre construction techniques to the 7 Series when it was introduced on that car earlier this year, and elements will be retained on the limousine’s smaller brother.
Quote:
The lighter components, likely to be focused around the bodyshell pillars, door frames and the transmission tunnel, will help the 3 Series to shed some weight – perhaps as much as 80kg, and enough to make it the lightest car in the small executive class.
Quote:
The CLAR platform is claimed to have been engineered with electrification in mind, and BMW’s engineers are said to be working on the installation of a 90kWh battery pack, potentially giving the 3 Series EV – which is likely to carry the badge eDrive Sport – a range of around 300 miles.
Quote:
The eDrive may not arrive until 2020, but there will be at least one plug-in hybrid from launch. It’s a new version of the 330e, using a development of the existing car’s 2.0-litre petrol engine set-up and an 87bhp electric motor – but with a larger battery pack to increase the electric-only range.

Inside, the 3 Series will get improved rear legroom as a result of a slight extension in the car’s wheelbase. And while the dash will look pretty familiar

Re: Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)

Are You the BMWi5?

Japanese Patents Reveal Possible BMW i5 Crossover.

Quote:
Recently registered by BMW in Japan, the detailed computer-generated images show a crossover model with styling traits eerily similar to those of the BMW i3 and i8, indicating that it could be the much-discussed third model in the marque's range of i models.

At the front, the vehicle pictured includes BMW's customary kidney grille and angular, horizontal headlights baring a striking resemblance to those from the i8. From the side, the four-door layout and design reminds us of the Tesla Model X with the front and rear door handles combined to look like one.

The rear is also immediately identifiable as a BMW due to the similar rear quarter panels as the i3 and the familiar taillights. When viewed from directly behind, the vehicle essentially looks like a bloated and slightly larger i3.

Re: Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)

BMW with its brand name is able to sell about 1500 i3s a month. Will be interesting to watch them fight Tesla with their supercharger network. Also the chevy bolt in this mix and we surely will know who will win very shortly. Tesla concentrate on market launch of the model 3 please. I dont want to go to mars!

Re: Rumour: BMW i5 coming up (Tesla Model S Competitor)

BMW Electric Crossover will have level 3 autonomy.

Level 3 means the driver can be “hands off, eyes off,” but needs to be ready to take over if the car alerts her to do so.
