Here's some news. I'll be disappointed if the Indian i20 doesn't get the 1.0 turbo petrol.

Except the VW polo GT TSI, we haven't get a premium hatch that has a good petrol engine. The only other powerful hatch I can think of the Liva TRD Sportivo.

Hyundai is understood to have started testing the i20 with a new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol motor, and could be launched internationally sometime in 2016. The engine is expected to be debuted under the hood of the i20 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Hyundai had earlier revealed the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine alongside a new 1.4-litre turbocharged unit at the Paris Motor Show 2014. The 1.0-litre unit, based on the current 1.0-litre three-cylinder Kappa unit that powers the smaller i10, features direct injection and a small, single-scroll turbocharger, producing up to 118bhp and 17.56kgm of torque.

In Indian markets, the i20 is expected to carry on using the petrol engines currently on offer.

We haven't got a GDI turbocharged engine in any hatch, other than Polo TSI. But cars like Eco-sport in similar price range offer better engine technologies. Eco-boost 1.0 is one kind of engine combining technologies like Turbo-charging, Variable Valve Timing, Direct Injection, deliberately unbalanced flywheel, Exhaust manifold bolted to the head, a low inertial turbo etc etc.

This little engine from Hyundai is very much comparable with Eco-boost 1.0 in numbers although the Eco-boost is technically superior.

Hyundai can actually launch the Elite i20 and the Verna with the 1.0 ltr and the 1.4 ltr turbo charged power trains.

The 1.0 ltr T-GDI - 3 Pot direct injection engine in 2 state of tunes

100 PS & 170 NM of torque @ 1500 RPM
120 PS & 170 NM of torque @ 1500 RPM

The 1.4 ltr T-GDI that delivers 140 PS & 242 NM of torque @ 1500 RPM

Hyundai has also developed a 7 speed dual clutch transmission that is already available in the new i30, i40 and the new Tucson.

If only HMIL can gets this to India, highly possible that the 1.0 ltr engine making its way under the Elite's hood, at least the 100 PS one. Turbo petrol are getting popular and we might have a slew of cars to choose from

The i20 Sport is powered by to a 1.0-liter Kappa T-GDI three-cylinder engine with 118 hp and 172 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.3 seconds

NDTV Auto speculates that the newly introduced turbo petrol i20 with the T-GDI engine in i20 Sport might hit Indian shores considering the possibility of a Baleno turbo petrol.
There is similar speculation at Motoroids too-

It is expected that Hyundai will introduce their new family of engines to the Indian market considering the recent spotting of Maruti Suzuki Baleno with a similar 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The test mule was spotted undisguised in Cochin during a public road test.

The Kappa T-GDI is a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit producing 120bhp of power and 172Nm of torque and it is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
Performance figures are impressive with 0-100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and claimed mileage of 20 kmpl.

This T-GDI unit made it's debut in Kia Cee'd with two power outputs-98 bhp and 118 bhp. Kia Cee'd reviews suggest marginally better performance than the Ecoboost in Ford Focus (link).

Whatcar has a positive review too on the T-GDI in Kia-

Largely impressive. For starters, it's one of the most refined three-cylinder units we've come across, staying vibration free and quiet during normal driving. Even pushing it hard only produces a hushed version of the typical three-cylinder thrum. The manual gearshift is reasonably slick, too, while high-speed road noise and wind noise are mostly kept outside.

Its performance in this higher state of tune is surprisingly good. It's certainly not fast, but because its torque is available over a usefully broad range, it'll pull from low revs without fuss, even if ultimately it never feels quick in the process. If you press the engine and work the gearbox, it easily has enough speed for accelerating on to motorways and keeping up with traffic once on it.

The German version sports 18 inch wheels and 20mm lower ground clearance. I am sure this will not be the case if launched in India.

The 1.0-litre engine is a three-cylinder unit and can put out up to 118bhp in some applications, but in the i20, it makes a steady 99bhp.

Of course, the three-cylinder has that characteristic hum triples do. It’s quiet enough, but thrummy, endearingly so, as is often the case. Owing to the turbo-charger, the small 1.0-litre unit takes a bit of time to respond.

The 1.0-litre has a five- rather than a six-speed manual ‘box, whose second cog will see you past 100kph, while at 113kph in fifth, the engine’s only spinning at 2500rpm. The long gearing will often see you using a lower gear than expected – second around corners rather than a third

The gearshift itself is easy, although in the same way as the six-speed, it’s sometimes easy to drop it into third instead of first when you’re stationary, but if you’re positive, it responds amiably.

The addition of the 1.0-litre unit will bring more power and punch to the comfortable and well-equipped premium hatchback and that should only serve to strengthen its case. Although no India launch date has been announced as yet, when it does come to India, the Hyundai i20 1.0 will rival the likes of the Maruti Baleno RS, which will be powered by a 1.0-litre Boosterjet motor from Suzuki and is slated to arrive in Indian showrooms later this year.
