| For quite some time, I am toying around with the idea of either souping up good old RX135, or exchanging it with another powerful bike (No ZMA or P-180 for me, but something from Yamaha stable like Fazer 250). I am still not decided on it, but what possible modifications can be done on RX135? I need your inputs on following:

| This is what I'd recommend: * Buy a new 5 speed bore kit and head (the 5 speed bore revs out much better than the 4 speed bore) - this will cost about Rs. 4000 in all * Polish the new bore and get a street port (mild) done on the bore by a reputed tuner (cost can vary between Rs. 500 and 4000 depending on the tuner) * Upjet the carb to match the new bore * Install a UNI or K&N air filter - this will be a conical sorta filter which attaches directly to the carb and will necessitate the removal of your existing airbox (about Rs. 2500) * Resprocket to the 5 speed sprocket kit (I believe it is 16/34 as opposed to 16/36 for the four speed) (~Rs. 500 for a new kit) * Try to get your hands on an expansion chamber from a reputed tuner (PM me for details) (costs vary between Rs. 1500 and 4000) * Install a Pulsar disk brake kit for the front - this is probably the best upgrade one could make for an RX (~Rs. 4000) * Get the CDI unit replaced - a reputed B'lore based gentleman makes some awesome CDI units (~Rs. 2500) * Replace the entire gearbox to that of a 5 speed - expensive route and not much recommended - it is probably better to sell your 4 speed 135 and buy another 5 speed instead (~Rs. 5000) Do all of these performance mods and your bike will easily better the Pulsar 180s and the like. Other optional upgrades include replacing the carb with a flatslide carb, & installing performance reed valves/spacers. You may also want to get your bike kitted out with a 100/90 lighting kit. |

| Team-BHP Moderator ![]() | I know a guy with whom two of my friends have got their RXs(RX 100 & RX 135) ported. One of them also owns an RD & has got all his stuff on his RD done by the same guy. Both of them are extremely happy with his work. I have seen some good bikes at his garage. But some how people\member of RD Dreams call him Fake. i guess one of the RDD members was duped by him. Well for RD i cant say much because the parts are always an issue. But I think RX should be just fine. So if you are interested I will let you know his workshop details.

| All those mods are exciting, but without 5 speed gear box, I can't really use all the performance enhancements. And looks like 5 speed gear box costs a bomb (~5000 Rs.) I feel, instead of spending 15-20K on modifications, I might as well buy a new one. (Yamaha sucks big time. They still are going to launch F250).

| Hey RX135, The 5 speed gearbox costs almost 8000/- brand new. But Yamaha does sell what they call a 'conversion kit' in which you change a couple of gears and a few components - you can get that for around 2200/-. The ratios will not be exactly the same as a 5 speed box, but you still have 5 gears to play with and it will benefit performance. It's not necessary that you change to a 5 speed cyl-piston kit to get good performance. Ported 4 speeds can deliver good initial acceleration. Go for the 5 speed kit if you are more interested in the top-end. @Speedsatya : The Bangalore-based tuner that airfoil has mentioned is none other than Mr. R.D. Chinoy who runs RDDreams. He sells a digital CDI for the RX series for approx. 1950/-. @mail4ajo : It lets your bike rev out much more, the engine runs cooler, emissions are lower and if you have a light wrist on the throttle, will improve F.E. drastically. I have used this CDI on my RX135 and it resulted in a F.E. of 58.2 kmpl 'cos I ride very carefully. Have posted the review in the customer-feedback section of RDD. I think getting this CDI should be the first step for anyone looking to increase performance of their RX's. Hope this helps.

| How much of performance boost do these mods give out? In terms of torque and in terms of BHP? @Viju: I was not aware of conversion kits. I'll check if it is locally available.
