Hi I need to raise my Altura's ground clearance by at-least 1".On a recent trip to a small town, I found Altura scraping most of the speed-breakers.Service adviser at MSM suggest rubber pads at shockers but warns about bad handling. Is there some better way to increase ground clearance?

helloo sans :)
you could try koni dampners with Stiffer Springs. The added stiffness would go a long way in preventing your car from bottoming out. This is simply because with the stiffer springs and koni's what happens is that the dampners take longer to reach their full extention. this woud give you enough time to clear the speedbraker without hitting it . i would suggest that you first get the springs changed and see if this sorts you out.. if not then go for koni. The rubber pads for the hight increse will just ruin the handling as it will raise the center of gravity of the car.
hope this helped :)

Where is reply # 2?

Whats your current tyre size?

Stock tyres 165/80/R13 Bridgestone

you can change tyres to 185/65/R14 for little increase in height. total dia of this tyre will become 23.46''. stock is 23.39''

All baleno's has this problem of underbody scraping....Not much u can do about it without sacrificing the handling ...

One jugaad is putting 175/80-13 tyres on stock rims but this is not the correct upsize but will surely save the car's underbody from scraping...

What if I opt for 15" alloys with relatively higher profile tyre,so as to increase total dia by about 1"

doing so will affect the braking ability of your car and also large speedo errors. The mileage figures that you will calculate will also be not correct as the odometer reading will also be not correct.

surely go in for a stiffer shocks like the koni's. let us know how it helped.

No pls dont go for 15" it will end up screwing your ride quality in a big way....14" is more than enough for Baleno..

Also 1" increase what are size are u planning for?

Well it's not recommended unless you're prepared to sacrifice ride quality. Also if you have a high-profile 15" tyre then your body will foul with the tyre in loaded situations. I would either say if you really want to increase the height either go in for KP's suggestion i.e. 175/80 R13 (Not an ideal upsize but should do the job) or live with it as is.

Do you have any idea what Koni's cost? Please suggest affordable solutions unless the person is specifically asking for a new suspension.
