The police helpline numbers on NH 1 do not work. The numbers 1033 and 1073 are not useable. Whats the need of advertising the same every KM or so when they do not work. This Sunday I was going to Chandigarh when I saw a white colored car do high speed cartwheels and ram into a side wall some good 20 meters from the road. I tired calling the helpline numbers but they wont work. Finally got hold of a Haryana Police NH1 ambulance at a petrol pump some 10 kms from the actual accident site. Told them about the incident and they promised to respond to it immediately. I plan to write to both Haryana Government and NHAI regarding these non operational numbers.

Mumbai - Pune E-way is part of the NH4. In addition to the one given above, these will also work: 98334 98334, 98675 98675

To the best of my knowledge, these 3 numbers work from Mumbai - Kolhapur at the very least; not sure if the Karnataka stretch of NH4 has different numbers or not.

Call Centres to Help Accident Victims

Hi All, found this interesting information from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Hoping that this gets implemented at the earliest.

For those of us, who like driving - if this happens, it will be a positive development towards ensuring safety of the roadies.

Below, text of the release from Press Information Bureau. I have not made any edits.

Call Centres to Help Accident Victims

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) requested Department of Tele Communication (DoT) for allotment of a toll free number. DoT allotted four digit short code “1033” for Road Incident Management Services with following salient features:-

(i) Category-I Service i.e. mandatory service to be provided by all Access Service Providers.

(ii) Unrestricted i.e. accessible from anywhere in India and

(iii) Non-Metered service.

Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL) a company promoted by NHAI is executing the project. Based on geographical contiguity, IHMCL structured the project under six zones. Procurement of Service Provider for setting up call center has been completed at 4 zones, as per details given below:-

West Zone – Work awarded to Bharat BPO Services Limited. Call Centre to be set up at Ahmedabad. States covered include: Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu.

South Zone – Work awarded to Bharat BPO Services Limited. Call center to be set up at Mysore.

States covered include: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Lakshadweep & Puducherry.

Delhi Zone – Work awarded to Apollo-Samarth-Dhruv JV. Call center to be set up at Gurgaon.

States covered include: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand & Madhya Pradesh.

Chandigarh Zone – Work awarded to Bharat BPO Services Ltd. Call center to be set up at Mohali. States covered include: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab & Chandigarh.

At present establishment and initialization of call center services is under testing.

This information was given by Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Pon. Radhakrishnan in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.

Re: Call Centres to Help Accident Victims

While I am happy with the idea in general, I am not sure how efficient this is going to work.

There is already 108 emergency number which covers major parts of roads. Then, for toll roads there is ambulances and tow trucks operated by the toll operator (May be they would be moved under this umbrella).

Now, consider someone calling up from an desolate highway in MP and trying to explain the location to the call center executive who is located in Gurgaon.

The same way, current 108 ambulances support for emergencies in town / villages along the NH or SH where they are located. Will the NHAI ambulance just support for accidents on highway or for any emergencies (say a heartattack) in adjoining localities?

Wouldn't it been better for the NHAI to strengthen the existing network by donating ambulances / money.

However, as I said earlier, pleased to see safety given consideration.

Re: Police and Helpline Numbers

Ministry of Home Affairs has launched Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) with a single number for 19 States/UTs.

The number is 112 and the ERSS team can be activated by various methods.

From the official website https://112.gov.in

Quote:
  1. Dial 112 from your phone;
  2. Press power button on your smart phone 3 times quickly to activate Panic call;
  3. In case of feature phone, long press ‘5’ or ‘9’ key to activate Panic call;
  4. Log on to State ERSS website and place your SOS request;
  5. Email SOS alert to State ERC; and
  6. Use 112 India Mobile App (available in Google Playstore and Apple store) to activate a panic call to ERC.
* In case of women and children, you can use 112 India mobile App to activate SHOUT feature, which alerts registered volunteers in vicinity for immediate assistance apart from activating ERC.

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY FACILITY.
USERS ARE ADVISED TO USE THIS SERVICE CAREFULLY.
Finally we need not remember different numbers for different emergencies
