Volvo S60: Check engine light comes on 11 times in 2 years!

Truly sucks that a premium car customer has to go through such a horrid after-sales experience. I hope this isn't indicative of Volvo's service levels in India. Here are three other threads that raise my eyebrows:

Volvo dealer's in-house pricing

No RC card for a year

How did my engine seize?

Now, Dr.Adarsh Yadwad shares the following.

- Volvo S60 D4 Momentum, bought from SRK Volvo Visakhapatnam in June 2015.

- He'd bought a demo car with 13,501 kms on it. Paid Rs. 1 lakh extra for extended warranty.

- Check engine light keeps coming on.

- Number of days off the road = 40.

- Each time the problem occurred, the engine used to rev a lot more, mileage used to drop and the gearshifts were delayed.

I've taken a look at Volvo's emails which state:

- The EGR (exhaust gas recirculating) valve was replaced.

- EGR cooler replaced.

- Soot filter cleaned.

- Oxygen sensor failed & replaced.

- Volvo's field support manager will be visiting "soon" to check his car out. I don't understand why he waited 2 years?

- What gets my goat is this para from Volvo! Volvo builds a problematic car, then says it's beyond their control!

Quote:
Here we would like to mention that since the car is an amalgamation of thousands of electrical and mechanical components , occurrence of such issues may arise due to different reasons beyond the control of any manufacturer.
If you can't build a reliable car with 'thousands of electrical / mechanical components', DON'T SELL IT! Also a serious reminder of why demo cars should be avoided. They are usually bad news.

Re: Volvo S60: Check engine light comes on 11 times in 2 years!

I think one of the three scenarios may have happened.
1. The car was a lemon to begin with.
2. The test drives for 15000 odd kilometers have damaged the components and a thorough overhaul is required rather than replacement of components one by one.
3. Dealer incompetence and inability to diagnose the problem.

In any case, agree that the Demo car is something one should keep away from. Even if you get a sweet deal.

Re: Volvo S60: Check engine light comes on 11 times in 2 years!

Looks like the car was a lemon from the time it was sold. I am not sure why they are not able to diagnose a simple CEL. An OBD2/VIDA scan will easily point in the right direction!

If this was the D4 engine, there were widespread issues with the EGR cooler and valve which need replacement followed by an updated map. I see the cooler and valve have been replaced. Has the map been updated?

If not, the O2 sensor is another culprit. Apparently pre MY2015 models are more problematic.

Does Adarsh Yadwad, have a copy of the generated fault codes?

I would have thought the easiest thing would be get a copy of these from Volvo and then force (for lack of a better word), the service center to change all components associated within the trouble shooting section of these codes.

Additionally there are tons of manufacture centrist forums, for the customer to voice his concerns on and to get the help of other members who may have had similar problems.

The car must be a lemon - I am not sure 13500 kms (unless clocked back) of abuse should effect components like these.

Premium or not, no one wants a car with these problems. And premium or not, its time companies reacted to customer problems proactively. Our government needs to frame some proper laws to protect the customer and ensure he is actually 'king'.

Re: Volvo S60: Check engine light comes on 11 times in 2 years!

Am not sure the cause is because it is a demo car

The fault might be one of the following:

1: Defect diesel particulate filter system. The engine revving to regenerate the filter

2: In connection with the above, extra fuel being used to regenerate the DPF instead contaminates the engine oil and cause the engine to run on.

Additionally, how good is the diesel quality

Worth getting the diesel and oil analyzed

Do cars in India have DPF?

Since, Law doesn't mandate it, I guess. And it's unnecessary expense to the owner.

Car was bought in June 2015 with 13k on the odo but what is the reading on the odo now or what was it when the check engine light came on for the first time?

Not trying to be the devil's advocate but could we have a little more info on the usage of the car? It will be easier to diagnose the root cause of the problem.

Yes.

When we went to Leh as part of the Audi-Overdrive Independence Quattro Drive last year, the DPF on the new Q7 got blocked and we were stranded somewhere between Jispa and LEh at 13000 feet!

The second Q7 too ran less than optimally for the rest of the journey but didnt break down at least.

We were told that these issues were due to the DPF getting blocked as we were crawling most of the time and the engine didnt rev enough to clear the filter.

Just checked. The last time it visited the workshop was for soot filter cleaning @ 40862 km.

Thats too early. I am betting

1: Bad fuel quality
2: Engine oil contaminated with diesel

Re: Volvo S60: Check engine light comes on 11 times in 2 years!

A car breaks down at 41000 km - with about 27000 of those in less than two years. Skoda owners would have been deighted with such reliability.

But more seriously, this could well be a fuel issue - most other things get diagnosed quite easily. In fact, I have seen hired Mercs in Hyderabad which have their check engine lights on. Question is whether this problem occurred before the OP bought the car, and if the dealer ruined the car by running it with the light on.

That's my friend's car in picture. That car didn't have any problems mentioned above. He loves his Volvo and takes it for quite a few spins across the country !!
