Various views of doing the ditch right using spare tyre as support:

Putting tyres under the wheel that is expected to come down. And using tyres from both the vehicles to make a step up for exit.

Doing it wrongly. The tyre should have been under the wheel that is planned to go down. So the approach in to the ditch is wrong. Or the tyre should have been under the right front rather than lying waste on left front. Just copying what the others did is not the solution

While I have tried to communicate the Trials at the Trail Challenge this video from Ranvir does full justice. From the recce to the actual running. Up to 1:32 is recce and then the competition

At 2:10 the team realises that they can send the second vehicle to the top and pull tow the first vehicle up the bank. And you can see team captain directing with arms and body language.

At 2:30 the first car enter the slush pond and then tries to go up the other edge without success. The pond floor is not so slushy as he is able to reverse out easily. It is only that at the particular spot he is trying to come out there is a step at the edge and he cannot climb it. Later other vehicle took a slightly different path and came out easy.

Also see at 4:00 the second vehicle readies for towing the first one but as he himself is parked on slushy ground his tyres are rotating and he digs himself silly! Instead of helping out now he needs help.

Finally at 5:00 both vehicle come out. One won its own power the second with push help from crew. Now the second vehicle goes for the crossing and is quickly towed out but note that the first vehicle stays away from slush so as not to get stuck himself. At 5:45 note how the second vehicle goes over the tow strap. This can be dangerous and should be avoided.

At 6:00 they go down embankment to enter the stream bed and at 6:20 you can watch them heading back to the start end point through series of dips and jumps. AT around 6:40 the second teams start the Trail Challenge.

Now these are some extreme jumps. Were they needed? I do not think so. While they do look spectacular but can cause more harm on hard landing of front wheels. One of the Gypsy broke his front leaf springs and ruled his team out of contention.

Finding and retrieving lost transmission parts from slush:

After the C Articulation there was not enough time to take on another challenge. We wanted to finish early enough so that the teams from Delhi and other far places could drive back home in reasonable time.

The local Mahindra Agency gave us good support during the day and their General Manager was at hand to give out trophies for individuals. The team trophy was handed over by the runners up team leader from Terrain Tigers to the Leader of the winning team Gerrari Offroaders. This was followed by some photo shoot session and some liquid refreshments to soothe the parched throats.

Some of the off-roading crowd had not had enough and promptly jumped in to the Question Mark challenge.

The team though that they will use tyres to allow the oncoming vehicle some grip in the slush. However much to every ones amusement while tyres were heavy they floated in the water!!

Carefully negotiating the bottom of V Care needs to be take in not getting stuck and angle of approach and departure needs to be taken in to account


As soon as situation allows apply acceleration while the rear of vehicle is still coming down the first slope. This gives momentum to allow the vehicle to take the up slope with least wheel spin.

One question - i read somewhere that these tractor tyres are banned in all international offroad competitions, is it true?

@shubhendra: You'd be welcome either way at any UNCAGED. WOuld love to work and the event to have participants from other regions. That would increase interaction and learning many folds.

What is banned or not will depend on rules of the event. How do you differentiate between a highly lugged tyres and tractor ones? Yes for highway use these are not allowed as the speed rating is low.

Sudev Ji,
I see it as - If best practices have been followed by others across globe why not us ( I admit that i have limited knowledge of motorsports). Point i want to make is, this sport may be at nascent stage now but it will grow multifold very soon and if we do not set correct practice now soon our adulterated practices would be followed by others as 'Best Practice'.
You all seniors are pioneers and would love to hear more from you about having unified rules and regulations across India.
You, Arka and other veterans who are involved in organizing this sport may start a thread on this topic.
