Like the title suggest "Lets plant a tree in every excursion" and why not. Mother earth is giving so much for us offroaders, we can show our gratitude and love by planting a tree in return.

It hardly cost anything, hardly take any labour and a tree is planted. The task is small but I am sure it will make a huge difference in long run.

Lets support this cause and make it a regular ceremony before or after food break in all OTRs. It would be a matter of proud to see tree planting pictures along with our other action shots. If we at team-bhp start doing this other national and international groups are sure to follow.:thumbs up

Ps- Can anyone suggest a good title (punch line) for this cause.

Ym-enjn,

Very novel idea. Planting tree sapling is fine, who takes care of watering is the big question. Best time to take up this initiative would be soon after onset of monsoon. Atleast for 2 months they get fed by rain.

Very Very creative & thoughtful. I would suggest why only one I think it should one plant per car in the excursion, so who so ever takes part plants a tree as well.

indeed a very noble thought and it shouldnt be a big deal to acheive the same.

all offroaders at T-BHP should commit to this.

cheers

Hi Yogesh.
This is and excellent idea.
As Samtheleo suggested, I think we should plant one tree per vehicle.

Regarding the puch line, how about

"PLANT FOR THE PLANET"

Dwarak Sir, excellent suggestion. But we can also think about plants/tress which doesn't require much water. Or simple solution!! plant them near a water body like streams or lakes if there are any.

Shibu

Shibu,

Atleast during the initial stages for a month or two saplings require sufficient water. Vegetation is normally found around water bodies. why plant when already vegetated?

May be water retaining solution has to be found to keep saplings fed for days.

Valid point Dwaraka, but as they say where there is a will there is a way.. We need to find a good solution to this problem. We should commit to at least one tree per OTR and we need to think ways to make that happen. In rains we shall plant more trees, but at least one throughout the year so that we do not forget the cause.

Does planting bigger trees would help?

More suggestions welcome..

@Yogesh, +1. I like this idea, and would actually prefer it if we can do it for any outing. We can get tree saplings from places like Trees for Free, or for a small amount, even govt nurseries.

Watering plants are one of spiritual things you can do in everyday life. Through watering even you are able to communicate with plants.
Billy Ocean,a singer of the 80s became a gardener.
Garden, is one of area socielism works very successful in Kerala. Rich and poor have a garden in front of their home. good feeling.

Perfect Dwaraka. We can surely do this during our Bangalore trips. Great idea from the thread starter!

Dwarak sir, what you said is true. There will be vegetation around waterbodies. But what is the harm in planting more trees there. I mean trees which will grow big and gave our next generations some good air and shade and flowers and fruits.:)

There are many water retaining techniques available and used world wide.We can explore more about this and use the one which is suitable for the climate in the area where we do OTR's.

In kerala for example we get rains almost all the months except from Jan to May. So watering will not be a serious issue.

I know Bangalore and North India and quite different. But lets try what best we can do. As we learned in nursery little drops make a mighty ocean. little trees by Jeepers might make a forest one day. clap:who knows.

Yogesh, ofcourse planting bigger trees will defenitely help. Or other option is plant the tree close to an area where is habitation and engage the local people to take care of it.

Or may be the offroading clubs can do it as a large campaign with local support and also engage the forest authorities. Forest dept might be able to give us free trees through out the year and most importantly the right ones for your area.

Keep the ideas coming
Shibu

What I suggest we find our favorite spot on each trail (at the same time most suitable for plant growth) and at each excursion keep adding trees in a systematic way. Soon we will have a good green patch coming up.

Whenever it is a family OTR with kids and all then we can plant more trees and give kids some activity too.

Once we have few trees taking roots I am sure they will remind us of good memories every time we visit them.

I can see our Punch phrase hidden in these two lines but can not make it out.. :)

Shibu, what is water retaining technique?

Very nice idea. We could get the plants from forest department too.

In our residents association meeting we came up with this idea of planting trees along the road, couple of us were even willing to sponsor for buying the plants from the nursery, someone gave the idea of forest department, when we approached them they not only came with varieties of plants but also helped us plant trees along the roadside.

People around there know about trees and they could guide in selecting the plants based to the area you want it plant it. I am sure they would be more than willing to help this cause too. Whenever we go we may want to keep them informed so that they can help us.

A very good idea. I fully subscribe to it.

We can sow seeds or saplings of the trees that don’t require much water and are known for surviving in the wild. Also, when we help local villagers with money or medicines, we can request them to take care of our plants. If not all, at least some of the trees will eventually grow.
