Mahindra Scorpio Winch and Offroad bumper project

My friend Amit(with the grinder in pixs) and me, are doing a Mahindra Scorpio mod job, to make the SUV more Offroad capable and make it go to most of the place which otherwise we cannot with a 4x2 vehicle.

Me and most of my friends like Amit, are very found of traveling and going to adventurous place and destinations which are off the reach of normal tourists. Besides this we regularly also make short one day trips or excursions to some off the beat places around our city (mostly off road). So normally going to these places requires going through some bad terrains and doing some offroading though sand, mud, slush, river crossing and gravel etc etc. So we decided to install a winch onto Amit's Scorpio and a winch Bumper also to give it a crude offroader looks.

Snorkel, a high lift jack and some more mods are on the list next.

So now we are working on the project for the past 3 weeks and are done with winch mounting and soft bumper design which will be crafted into a hard design soon.

Did not get time to share it earlier, so just starting the thread with pics and some info, will add more soon.

Check this out

My Land Rover has a Warn M 10000 winch ( which I fitted myself )

Points of caution according to Warn's Instructions
1) winch to be mounted ' feet first '
2) L shape plate , 6 mm thick is required

I dont know what kind ( capacity ) winch you have but have a look here as to how I did it ( post # 8 ,in this link )
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-ve...mm540-4x4.html

Sudarshan
PS M 10000 is a 10000 pound rated winch that is 4.5 tons of pulling power.

Janab your scorpio was the only good example i could find on net before we started the project. Your scorpio has a very thin or say sleek bumper, we are planning a little fatter one so that the car does not look to weird on road, it because my friend Amit, whose vehicle this is, uses the vehicle for normal commuting also, so want it to be little normal looking offroading bumber. We will be using a 2mm MS sheet , which one did you use. We are trying to keep it as light as possible but it will not be as light as yours.

Thanks for the tips Sudarshan.

Heres what we have used. The 6mm plates are bolted directly onto chassis with 10mm nut bolt.

The winch mount shown in pictures is yet to welded on all joints.

Few pics of our OTR. Harry's Endevour got stuck, it took us 2 hr to get it out. Even scorpio was finding it had to pull it out with a tow chain. So we lifted the tyres with jack first placed stone under all four of them, and then we could pull it out with scorpio. I hope with a winch things would get easier and a high lift jack is also on way from Dubai.

Nice DIY with good WIP pictures, all the best for your effort, what winch is that?
BTW, won't the warranty be void if alterations are done to the Scorpio? (it looks fairly new).

@ allan, the Scorpio is drool stuff.

Awesome rishi. Glued to this thread. Waiting for the final pics & costs involved.

btw, your friend's scorpio is a 4x2, so he anyways cannot try extreme off roading... so why so much effort on a 4x2 scorpio?

Hi:

4WD Scorpios are made for people like you and your friend who go off the beaten path. It's a pity your friend went for the 4x2.

I also noticed that different parts of your winch plate are put together with small nut/bolts. I don't think this will withstand heavy load and it will sheer off. Potentially dangerous to have a 9000 lb winch flying at you.

raj_5004 : we do all kind of extreme stuff when there are two three suv's around to help you out and a winch and high lift jack can help out a 4x2 out of any place. Thats why we are putting in all this effort.

4x4addict : the winch mount is yet to be welded as i mentioned in the thread earlier. This is just to hold all nut bolt holes in place and give it a rigid shape. We are going to one of my friends(Manreet) workshop in Mohali, who will help with all kind of stuff like welding, moulding and bending and pressing etc, he has got a big workshop. We will weld it tomorrow and go ahead with bumper design.

Yesterday we almost spent the whole day at my friend Manreet's work shop, he has a big place with all kinds of press machines, shearing machine and cutters etc... Making the bumper as per our design has become very easy with all these machine and Manreet's dad's guidance.

We have used a 18 gauge MS sheet. Amit transferred all the measurements from the soft design to metal sheet with dot precision . And then with Manreet's help we gave it all the bends and cuts. It would have been very difficult to give the sheet such bends in such a clean way and specially the curved bend on top edge of bumper.

Here are the pics.

In the first pic you can see the sheet with basic dimensional cuts. In second pic you can see Manreet and Amit on shearing machine. And in the last pic Harry and Manreet towing in a sheet cutter. And finally at 8:30 in the night we were ready with main structural design of the bumper. And you can see from Amit's face how happy we were to mold the sheet to this shape.

Some 3D modeling, before we do the final side curves ( the most important and difficult task), seems like it will look good.

and where is WIP going on in chandigarh?
I too got a 4X2 Scorpio,i would love to have a look.

Hi.. this looks like a nice project. I wish you a successful outcome.
Could you share the cost of fabricating and fitting for the front & rear?

Regards,

Jay
