Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

Hi ,
I need to know, which one is better inline fuel pump or the rotary fuel pump. The mechanics and the garage owner are quite insistent on the inline pump di engine of 1999 ,while i also have similarly priced 2002 engine having rotary pump.
Moreover the engine mounts need not be tweaked for 1999 engine while for the 2002 rotary pump engine would require a great deal of work regards engine mounting.
Please post your comments as the jeep is in garage for body work and I have to decide in two three days regarding the engine

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

After, taking the proper time ,the jeep is up for restoration and renovation
The engine ,gearbox and lights have been removed from the body.
I intend to go for
a) Removable soft top .
b) Whole body is to be removed from chassis and tinkering .
c)The paint job is to be done
The choice of color is yet to be decided ,please suggest the colors
d)I have got a set of lambda free wheeling hubs
e)Two engines have been shortlisted
1.1999 mdi 3200 INLINE fuel pump engine
2.2002 mdi 3200 rotary fruel pump engine
Both the above engines are available at 40,000 rupees ( little bit negotiable)

Please suggest the needful and i need you active participation

Re: Finally gone ahead with rebuild,1986 mahindra international

The rebuild is going on.Today ,the body tub has been removed from chassis and chassis has been checked for any crack (no crack found).
Moreover yesterday the body was given a good dose of caustic to rinse the rust and given a good wash .
The body paint has been scraped and coat of primer applied for protection against rusting during the tinkering job.
Now the pictures will speak .

Please suggest the color of the paint for the jeep .
Moreover the engine is yet to be decided .(the bargaining is on to bring down the cost from 40k for the engines.
THE 1999 MDI 3200 engine does not need the any change in the engine mountings position but the 20002 mdi 3200 engine presupposes tweaking the mountings on the chassis .Secondly the local opinion is in favor of INLINE pump engine as its rugged and cheap to maitain .Thirdly its less noisy as compared to rotary pump engine,NEEDs EXPERTS CORROBORATION
waiting for the informed debate and discussions on aforementioned facts/fictions

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

I dont care about the year - but if anything will fit without modifying the existing OE engine mounts I would go for it... I wouldnt do a engine swap but since thats not a option here, at least try to stick to OE mounts...

PS _ Reason I wouldnt is, chassis is designed for a particular HP/Torque combo and definetly a 20year chassis is a step below a 10 year old (wrt to design, steel thickness, etc)

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

Good to see finally progress being made on this project. Why don't you consider repainting its previous original color. The beige which it had goes well with a major. I am attaching a pic for your reference for you to help choose the color.

Any tyre upgrade in the offing anytime sooner ?

The inline pump and rotary pump has different behaviours. it totally depends for what purpose the vehicle is used. i could briefly say if you are expecting low end torque and not high speeds, then go for inline pump or else if you want good speed and can compromise for low end torque, then go for rotary pump(good for highway cruising).

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

I was quite busy so could not post the status of the much debated and protracted restoration.
I have gone ahead with the path of least resistance and hence stuck with the stock B275 engine .
The following works have been undertaken.
1.Stripping down body tub from chassis
2.Scrapping off the old paint from chassis and the tub .
3.Minor tinkering where needed.
4.Chassis repainted.
5.Painting is still pending
6.Engine overhauled - set of pistons ,pistons rings .
7.Fuel pump overhauled at a authorised bosch service centre.

Still the final painting ,softtop and the electricals are pending .

Do share the cost break up of all work - tinkering, painting, mechanicals with spares/labor breakup.

Dear santosh,
The following are the main heads of expenditure subject to the final delivery of the vehicle
1.The tinkering and minor dent job-Rs 8000/-
2.The painting (with metallic rocky beige)-Rs14000/-
3.The pump overhaul costed Rs 9000/- as all the worn out parts were replaced with OEM parts.
4.The four second hand di major 2004 rims made me cough up Rs 3200/-
5.The engine overhaul
a.Spares Rs 16000/-
b. labour for the same Rs 3000/-
6.Two daewoo matiz front seats for Rs 2000/-
Still two final coats of painting is to be done along with proper rubbing polishing .
Moreover the electricals are yet to be done .
Finally the soft top and seats is going to be redone .
The cost of mechanicals like brakes ,steering assembly ,wheel bearings etc are yet to be calculated .

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

The days anxious of waiting is numbered.
My baby is ready after a complete makeover and I am really dying to bring it home ,but I am under house arrest under 10th of this month -taking my pcs pre exams on that day.
I could not help posting that jeep is almost ready barring last minute finishes like paint rubbing and polishing ,little of softop etc.
I promise you all would be elated when i post the pictures in day or two.
The team-bhp has really been instrumental in deciding me against engine swap .
I am really thankful to arka ,svsantosh ,shubendra and others who helped me take the informed decision regarding the rebuild.
Please have patience for a couple of days for the final photo session.

One thing more ,I suppose that i have to run in the stock B275 engine post the overhaul for at least 3000 kms .I plan to be easy on accelerator for the said period.
Secondly the ,I have procured the Lambda Free Hubs and plan to get it installed ,but i am not sure whether the mechanic has done it earlier or not,in that case I may be needing some real time instructions for it .
regards

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

Dear Praveen,
Congratulations!!!! finally your first Jeep is ready.
As far as Lambda FWHs are concerned, if you have bought brand new then you must have got fitting instructions with the set. If not, then svsantosh has scanned and uploaded manual somewhere in 4x4 section (4x4 technical). its easy and straight forward job. Even noob like me installed them in few minutes.

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

I may sound paranoid - but after the rebuild, change oil/filters @ 500Kms, check torque on all bolts (engine) and repeat @ 3000Kms - post that I think just stick to the 5000Km oil change cycle. Speeds - just dont over do anything, wrt to RPMS... at the same time, DONT under-DO it, meaning dont stall/knock uncessarily - keep it at healthy RPMs in each gear.

Dear shubhendra ,
yes ,I have got the installation instructions with the FWHs,i will try myself.
I test drove the baby for minutes as the vehicle needed to be parked at painters place for the final rubbing/polishing.
The noise of the engine and smoothness has really gone for perceptible change .
Though there are certain problems which has to be sorted out
1.The seating position is obstructing the clear through the windshield as the eyes are virtually parallel to the upper side of the windshield frame.
2.KHUT-2 sound from the differential ,necessitating opening it up and scout for the any worn out parts .

dear Santosh ,I am going to stick to all the precautions which you have prescribed for the run in .
Moreover please tell me how to know the differential gearing in both the front and rear side ,I mean are I want to make sure that both have same gearing ratios to preclude any harm to the power train

simple - open up the diff covers in front and back (good if you havent seen the insides of it).

Take a pinch of grease, apply on one teeth of the crown, jack a wheel up and rotate the wheel and crown along with - start counting - stop before the greased one. Pinion is simpler since its around 8 to 11 only!

Repeat for other diff.

Most likely you have 4.27 (47/11) (44/9 didnt come on cj500).

Re: Finally got a jeep, MM international

Dear friends ,
I am posting the pictures of the jeep after the restoration .
Though still a lot of things are remaining .
Things requiring immediate attention.
The steering is still very hard and requires great effort .
I am really happy that I stuck to the stock B275 engine ,I am really enjoying it to fullest .
I am quite careful with the gas pedal and keep the rpms low .
Now come to pictures
