Hello friends. I am bored driving the saloons. Would like to switch to a SUV, but confused between a used Nissan X Trail and Grand Vitara. Right now i cannot go in for a brand new vehicle so which of these is a better option? Endeavor, Fortuner, etc , are not my kind as i like compact SUVs only. Why is the resale value of X Trail so bad? even though i have read good reviews about this vehicle. i am offered a Nissan X Trail 2008 model for 8.5 lacks and Grand Vitara for 11 lakhs 2008 model.

My daily usage would be 15-20 kms and a long drive of about 200-300 kms once in a month. Good Offroading capabilities is a must have. How much would general servicing of these two vehicles cost in the company service center? Suzuki certainly has good after sales service but how about Nissan?

I am more inclined towards buying an X Trail as i love this vehicle, but opinion of the Bhpians would certainly influence my decision. Please guide.

Though both cars are CKDs I'm sure the keep-up cost of X-Trail will be costlier than Vitara. For off-roading I vote for Vitara and for the highway comfort X-Trail is best.

:Shockked: Am I reading the right figures? If the vehicle is in 'ok' condition for the quoted price, close your eyes and finish the deal.

Grand Vitara have been known to last (very long) our very own Sudev has been almost living in his Vitara. Here is the link

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-t...40-months.html

Apart from this i feel the maintenance will be slightly lesser for Grand Vitara as compared to X Trail, and Vitara would also enjoy wider service network. So my recommendation would be Grand Vitara.

I am assuming you don't mind it being petrol.

The pros and cons for both the vehicles are here as under:

X-trail:
Pros:
  1. Runs on Diesel
  2. Cheaper to procure due to bad re-sale value
  3. Japanese reliability

Cons:
  1. A soft roader
  2. Bad ASC network
  3. Spare parts will be hard to procure
  4. Expensive to maintain

Grand Vitara
Pros:
  1. Rock solid vehicle
  2. Can be easily rally prepped
  3. Wide ASC network

Cons:
  1. Higher resale value
  2. Runs on Petrol

Given everything, I would go with the Grand Vitara. Especially considering what Sudev has been using his GV for and how its still going strong inspite of multiple Raid De Himalaya and Desert Storm runs :)

Happy Shopping!

Since you need an SUV that can off-road, the discussion ends here....it is the Grand Vitara for you (of the two). The GV's 4x4 capability is far greater than the meant-for-tarmac X Trail.

However, in most other areas, the X-Trail blows the GV away. Be it engine (punchy diesel), interior quality, build and it's superb ride & handling balance.

If your priority is "serious" off-roading stay away from the X-Trail. But if the defination of off-roading means a one off run in non-tarmac situation, or even slushy paths, the X-Trail can handle that with aplomb (first hand experience)

Driving the X-Trail is a level or two above the GV, the punchy diesel is great in power & very frugal. My friend gets 16-17 kmpl in Delhi with 100% AC on. Highways it does around 20 kmpl.

The GV will give around 9 kmpl in the city & around 11-12 kmpl on the highway, depending at the speed. BUT this runs of petrol, so the running cost of fuel is very very different between the two.

Having said all of the above. The X-Trail will be more expensive to maintain, parts availability is few and far between even with dealers. Frankly 8.5L for a 2008 model which would have costed around 23L in 2008, makes me a little suspicious. But it can be verified from the Service Center, if it has any major issues, due to which it may be on the block.

Happy buying !!

Can you post what is the mileage of the X-Trail? I am sure it is close 100 k kms and lot abused. 11 lakhs on the GV is ambitions price from the sellers side.

RICKY, i am not looking for a serious offroading with any of these vehicles as i have a willys for that fun but petrol is not my preference. Believe there is also an X Trail of the year 2006, 1.3 kms done, for just 5.8 lacks. The one which is offered to me is 80kms done. That is the reason why i asked about the poor resale when it comes with such a punchy diesel engine, strong built and japanese reliability!

IS THERE A DIESEL VARIANT IN GRAND VITARA?

Wishful thinking my friend !! If there were a diesel variant, it would have set the sales charts of GV on fire. The main reason for it not doing well is becasue it DOES NOT have a diesel variant. Though one is in the offing...

The 11L price, it is definately on the higher side for a GV, how much mileage has it done ?

As for the X-Trail. The one which has 80k on the odo has enough engine life left, provided the 80k can be checked at the service center as being the genuine odo reading

Cheers

Since you have the "off road specialists" in your garage and isnt looking at using the new addition to replace them, its X Trail any day.

No, GV doesnt have a diesel engine

Why are you not considering a Skoda Yeti if you want a compact SUV? Do give that a look.

Otherwise the most rounded option is the Fortuner, though its big, but I dont see X-trail or Grand Vitara as very compact. Do read my Fortuner review here as on option - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-d...uilt-last.html

Best of luck for your final decision.

X Trail 2008, it's 2.2. Kindly check clutch and turbo. Turbo failure was a major concern with 2.2 DCI motor.
Though 8.5 L price looks tempting, got it checked thoroughly for clutch and turbo.
Nissan service is good. As stated by others, delay in parts is obvious for CBU but things are not that bad. Also there is reliable info about Nissan launching CKD X Trail. If it's correct then problem of delay will be taken care.

If there is no major issue, go for X Trail. The build quality is bulletproof and so the driving dynamics. X Trail handling is better than some of the luxury saloons.
What is a milage of GV?
If looking only for used SUV, also check Outlander.

Oh no sir, Skoda Yeti is a strict no no for me. I dont like the shape at all, It doesnt give the feeling of an SUV from any corner. I am absolutely unaware of its abilities but its the looks first then performance. I think aftergoing through the reviews of all the bhpians i have to add a couple of more vehicles to my option including Fortuner. Thanks.

That's a crazy mileage for an SUV ! :Shockked: Do you have the service costs of this car by any chance? Would love to know how much does the normal schedules cost.

Do you have any more details on this? I have heard good reviews about this car, the 4x4 capability & drive & handling as well. The biggest put off is, as you said, the non-availability of diesel. When do you think we can expect a diesel version ?

The GV has done almost 73000 kms with a slight body work on the right side. Appears to be a parking crash. X Trail is superbly maintained but not option of driving it to service center as the owner is a little egoistic and everytime i ask him to leave the car, he says, what boss you are doubting me, my words carry a lot of weight, this that, irritates me a lot. As far as outlander is concerned it is a good option but a little bigger in size, will certainly check it out.
