Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

^^ That support is one good thing you have done with the fabrication. Rest all seems doubtful including use / lack of wedges. Please have a look at Bolero rear door.

^^ Let me see. Also Spike, is there a way to reduce the racket made by the lock?. I'm thinking of adding door beadings.

SPIKE ARRESTOR, Tell me about it. I have hade this issue in all my 4x4's where I went for upsize tyres. In my MM540, MM550 , Gypsies and even my Wrangler I am facing this issue every now and then.

I should have thought better. Anyhow.. ALL IZZ WELL in a Jeep, eh?
dhanushs, To be really honest. I didn't like the rear door reenforcement you made for supporting bigger tyre. As Spike mentioned it wont last long. IMO . not even a month!! Better go for the latest MM550 type door. Else go for a custom bracket fitted on your rear bumper.
Yes ALL IZZ WELL in a Jeep. Welcome to the club.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Dhanush, As JC pointed out, perhaps you can pick up an army 550's tailgate from mvtpuzha during the 4x4 conversion. Wouldn't cost much.
And the lock, while at it, you might want to look at the Major's (2009/10) tailgate and its locking mechanism.

army 550's tailgate + spare wheel carrier will cost you 5K. army MM550 Spare wheel carrier costs 3-3.5k.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Dear bhp's, Thanks a lot, for the valuable suggestions.

Well, as of now, I have decided to run with this, until I see signs of misalignment, cracks, shear marks etc..

The way this Jeep is used now (About 50kms daily, and through in existent roads) , I'm sure if there is some issue, it should crop up within a month just like JC pointed out.

I regret not posting my query/update here prior to the installation. I really though it should be super simple. After all its was a tailgate. Now.. let me wait.. and see.

Also, Spike, Right now, I have kept the 'H' of leaf springs = height measured at the midpoint of the arc's (leaf springs) base at 5.5 inches. Planning to increase it to 6 inches, as I suspect my tyres would foul the fenders on some extreme action. Whats your take on that? (btw, what do you call H in Jeep terms? )

Umm.. Jeevan, isnt the Major's tailgate fragile? Even Thar's was not recommended. I don't remember it correctly though.

Hi,
Have a feeling that after some time, the stopper will prevent the door from closing properly.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

ur design will put load on the tub just above the rear bumper and the tub will crack. i have seen this issue personally. leave the tail gate as it is and keep the spare inside the jeep for now. good diy none the less.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

After a couple of extremely busy weeks, I have managed to install the frame for the soft top.

Here's some sample pics. More detailed pics will come up lateron..

Dhanush, what is your idea behind this frame for ST, what size is the pipe? Also, please show us how you have mounted the frames on to the panels.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Dhanush,

When the soft top is streched over the frame it will turn out exactly like the shape in the below pic. Make it sectional where the rear half comes off from B pillar.

Spike,

Without additional pipes, this one doubles up as a roll bar and soft top frame. Advantage.

Re: Got JEEP??.. Hell Yeah.. My MM540

Fazal Sir, I know ^^. But, how is the sag at the center controlled in that case?

Prateesh,

The fasteners on the side of the body (over the rear tyre arches) takes care of the sag, plus the rear loop inside.

Dhanush,

Hope this helps, apart from this my top was in thick canvas, if you are going for SRF, you may need flat nylon belts over the pipes and under the top to prevent the sag, like in my Lynx.

Spike, the idea is just cosmetic. Nothing else. But, now Fazal Sir says, the roll cage benefit is an added advantage?. However, I'm not sure if the pipes and mountings would bear the weight fully. I'll post some detailed pics, and let you experts comment.

Sure, give me sometime. Right now, the Jeep is sent for some patchwork painting, so that I can show the RTO whist the registration process.

Thanks a ton Fazal Sir!!.. The Jeep looks killer.. Just as I expected!

I think I'd have to go for SRF as good quality canvas is not available here. Even in Calicut, it seems. :( (I was soo hell bent on canvas!)

Also, got the glass frame fixed.
