Hi,
A friend of mine is restoring a Ex army 2000 model MPFI gypsy , this thread is to document the same as the approach to this rebuild is a bit different from the regular ones.
The Objective is to make a reliable daily use Gypsy , which will be capable of doing some mild off roading.
Current status of the Build -:)
clap:clap: That looks DELICIOUS! If your friend intends to keep the Gypsy for long, the best way to restore it is from the ground up. Use new OEM parts wherever possible for the best durability & reliability.
Also, be sure to take pictures & document each job done. It makes for one heck of an album later
Is the restoration being done at an authorised service station? Excellent decision, though expensive (I did the same).

Yes the work is bieng done at an authorised Maruti Suzuki workshop.

Everything to the last detail on the base vehicle will be built to factory specs using OEM parts , as reliability of the base platform is paramount , as you can see a complete new bodyshell was ordered since no corners have to be cut for this build.
Will keep updating as work continues.

Why not buy a new one? or a Thar given current fuel prices?

This entire build will cost only 50% of the OTR price of a new Gypsy.

oh okay, my normal understanding has been that the cost of a vehicle in parts is always 2-3x the ex-showroom cost (including labor).
then its a great idea provided good mechanics and spare time!
wbd8779: That's a heck of detailed restoration. I can visualize the end result and its fantastic. Good luck for the rest of project. Any deviations planned apart from OEM specs?

Thats a great effort indeed!
It will be great if you also let us know the cost involved (maybe phase wise, since it is a detailed project) Only if you dont mind sharing.
To start with i will be keen to know the cost of restoring the body.

If i remember correctly the cost of the new body shell is around 88k , this shell got delivered a few days back only , will confirm the exact cost.
Earlier the body shell was expensive at around 135k as it came finished in white and only needed a polishing job after fitting , now MS sells the shell in base primer and is hence cheaper.
I will put up a detailed cost list after a few days.
Docfreak - I guess there is no special additive that i can write down and you are welcome to come and take a test drive once the Gypsy is completed and make out the subtle differences from the regular rebuild jobs.

Looking at some of your pictures and quoting the above i really doubt the cost would be half of a new gypsy. Might be pretty close to a new one. Your already down 88k with the shell alone.

We did not buy the bare chassis , it was bought complete with the junk body in running condition with a MPFI motor and registration for 125k. The body was scrapped since it needed a lot of work . So at the moment we have everything required to complete a stock gypsy with us.
Replacements that are needed -
- Windshield /Side Glass Set
- Rubbers
- Lock set
- Headlights / backlights / indicators
- Dashboard - Probably will be replaced but it only costs 1200/-
- Front and Rear Bumpers
The onroad price of the Soft top Gypsy is close to 6 lacs in the NCR region , Currently we are at 2.2 lacs only.
The tyres will be a major burden , but even with that taken into acount the cost will not exceed 3.25
