Jeep CJ3A

Friends, I have these questions about CJ3A.

Will be grateful if experts can comment . Excuse me if I sound stupid with any questions.

1)Was CJ3A ever made/assembled in India?
2)How many CJ3A were imported to India and by whom?
3)If any of fellow bhpians own one – please post pics or their ownership experience
4)How do you identify a original CJ3A or differentiate it from CJ3B converted to CJ3A?
5)Is there anyway we can identify a CJ3A with the chassis number
6)I understand CJ3A came with L-head engine, any chance of finding an engine or getting parts?
7)What was the original GB and TC which came on CJ3A?
8)And finally how much should someone pay for a CJ3A?
9)Any advantages or disadvantages for a CJ3A compared to CJ2A,MB, GPW and CJ3B.
10) I know lot of these info are available online But I would like to hear from the experts.

Thanks in Advance
Shibu

Hi Shibu, I know and have seen personally a CJ3A here in Chennai with royal blue old painting. However the engine was changed with Peugeot one and Diesel stamping on it. It had the same 3speed gearbox T-90 with Dana T18 transfercase.

Three years back the owner was quoting 2.8L for it, now I'm not seeing the vehicle for quite some time.

The grill had the same look of CJ2A, but not really sure about if they were assembled in India or imported as a Jeep itself.

I'm sure they would have been imported or assembled for Army.

Shibu,

One of the toughest Jeep ever came out of production. And for the same reason, one of the most "Raped" Jeep in India. For this reason, all of 3As were eventually modified and converted to people/load carriers. This is the reason why it's very difficult to find compared to Willis MB or ford GPW though 3A is a later model (1948-1952 i think)

1) Not Sure
2) NA
3) I cant re-collect anyone. Watch "Abhiyun Nanum (Tamil) you can get an idea how it looks like .
4) CJ3A was the last Low Bonnet Jeep came out of Willy's Stable (F-Head was taller than side valved L-Head, hence tall Bonnet for 3B). below the windshield, there are 3 rectangular shapes, one of which is an air scoop. Head light was larger.
5) No idea But i suppose it should have enough clues.
6) I don't see a chance, (UBS Sir is an exception) and u can get from eBay as well
7) Siva answered this already
8) I have one LH in my radar, with original engine and body, But asking price is so high.
9) As i told, one of the toughest Jeep ever Born!!!

Thanks

No not original. Front headlight and bonnet looks like Willys MB/Ford GPW.
suerly its a tinkers Job. This is the reason we lost all original 3As. Following is the classic example. look at those huge headlights, which invades to grill. Source "ajeepthing.com"

Thanks Sree for the info and clarifications.
BTW- what do you mean by toughest Jeep ever made? Is that something to do with chassis or drive train?

Waiting for more inputs from UBS Sir, Behram Sir , Arka and other Gurus.

Hi Mite, Good to know you are also infected with CJ3A fever. Now lets see who gets cured first.

Have you got some snow this year in Macedonia? Awaiting pics of your CJ4A in action in snow.

Re: Jeep CJ3A

Hi Friends,

I know this is an old thread and I am posting on it. I am doing since you query too is related to a CJ3A.
A friend of mine recently bought a CJ3A in Bhopal. We are confused if it is a CJ3A or M38 or a combination of two. I can see distinctive features of both CJ3A and M38 both together in this model which is confusing me. I know CJ was supposed to be a civilian jeep with distinctive features which made it different from an M38 which was built on the same platform. I have also read that in many countries armies used modified CJ3A in the army as well.
I would really appreciate if someone can confirm if Cj3A was ever used to Indian army.
I am also adding a few pictures.to support my query above.

Thanks in advance!

Jeep CJ3A

Dear BHPians - so glad I see this thread updated in 2022. Looking hard for a CJ2A or a CJ3A; not sure where to look. Preferably close to stock, though chances are slim, I guess.

Some help from BHPians:

1. What do I need to watch out for?
2. CJ2A or 3A, what will be your pick?
3. Which engines were they using? And should I go for Diesel or Petrol?
4. If I did have to source spares, where am I most likely to get lucky?

Great if I can get something one registered in Kerala, but hardly any on fbmarketplace or olx.

Have a CL 550 MDI which is now up for sale. Hooked to CJ2/3A.

Look forward.
