@santosh

Even if your battery went dead, the alternator/dynamo should have substituted for it. So in this case did the alternator quit ?

In event of a transmission wind up, flat tow is not recommended hence propeller shafts required to be disconnected.

I was wondering that if we have to tow the vehicle and its is not possible to remove the propeller shaft, would it help if from the 4x4 lever we slot it into neutral and keep towing the vehicle?? This was the vehicle's gearbox & transfer case would not be engaged!

@harjeev

Ya the method you suggested would work fine if the damage was in the main transmission/gearbox, but if you had a situation as Arka mentioned regarding T-Case having damage like the Main Shaft Gear Nut giving way, this method won't work as the main shaft of the T-case will keep spinning even in the Neutral position, hence creating more gear damage.

In case you have FWhubs in the front you could set it to the free position and for if the rear axels are of fully floating type you could remove either both axle or just the end flanges, and then cover the hubs suitably to prevent dirt contamination. This way you could save on the prop-shaft removal.

Hi Harjeev,

It doesnt matter if you slot the Main Gear Box or T-Case in Neutral.

When a vehicle is being towed the wheels rotate at a speed, then the axles rotate the Diff, the Diff rotates the prop shaft at 4-5 times the wheel speed, there by rotating the Gears in the Gear Box, and even the Engine.

The CJ3B Page has the issue covered much better.

I remember having this discussion on the towing thread and the best option decided was to go for a FFRA (as suggested by Arka) and have FWHs on the rear too. Unlock both and tow without tension.
