For those who don't want AC and HT, you've already been served. Why deny those who want both from asking for them? You have what you want, let others get what they want.
For those wanting an AC and HT, please join my line. After the witch hunt, you will be told the following (like I have been told in the Thar threads)...
1. We need to buy Maruti Vans and not the Thar
2. We're unfit to buy the Thar/ The Thar is not meant for us
3. We're not macho men, but dainty weaklings because of the following reasons
i) We don't find sticking our nose up exhaust pipes and inhaling exhaust fumes to be an activity that makes us more male
ii) Shame on us, we don't like eating and inhaling dust
iii) Our stomach churns with body odour and we hate the idea of making others suffer the same when they're around us
iv) Climbing a rock without AC and HT will get you 1 point extra
v) People in other countries deserve HT, but being an Indian, how dare you ask for all this? Learn to adjust with whatever is dished at you at whatever price.
After all this is explained to us, the "real men" might consider us worthy enough of being shot and shoot us.
Moving On, I'm glad to see people talking about vehicle security. I brought this up way back in one of the zillion Thar threads.
No AT tyres? Brilliant!! This will make us very macho indeed!!!
Assuming initial Thars wont have A/c, by getting it done outside void Warranty?
Will it be easier to find good A/c mechanics who could fix these? Earlier days most of the vehicles were without A/c and there were lot of A/c mechanics who could do the job. Now a days almost all vehicle come with an A/c, are there people still do this job professionally? I got A/c fixed for my Gypys in 98 from a professional who had his workshop on the road parellel to Magarath Road (behind Garuda Mall). Not sure these workshops still exist.
@M&M Folks.
I think the easiest way to break this log jam is to offer the Bolero Storm with 4WD. This way you will have a vehicle for the off-road community and the 4WD Touring car segment.

Who said that the HT available abroad is factory Fitted?

jp1 - this workshop still exists - probably one of the oldest A/C shops in Bangalore (I remember taking my 800 for a checkup there back in 90-91!!)
Shop name - Wecool
Owner's name - Tobias ( His son Anthony is there nowadays )
It is a good thing that Thar comes with HT tyres. It is very easy to trade off the Scorpio specs HT tyres and get the exact AT/MT tyre we want. Does anyone really want M&M to choose the right tyres for us?

In Italy it comes with HT. Probably it is a law there.

+1, I had to part with my Gypsy ~ a decade back because of the absence of an A.C. unit. You soon start realizing that the guy sitting in a much cheaper car (800 then & Nano now) is enjoying the comforts of an A.C.
Actually there is nothing macho about not having an A.C, P.S. I would say these are
pseudo machos. Quote:

Im in line! As I said these are pseudo-machos, don't pay heed!
The commonest logic that comes to mind on why MM skipped A.C. is because its a softtop. Cooling is severly compromised in a S.T. but that won't keep me from going in for a after market fitment because I just want the cool air circulating for the front passengers.
I think an aftermarket A.C. unit would cost ~ 20k.

It is a dealer installed option in Italy not provided by Mahindra.
India sends computer programmers to USA, rockets to outer space, but Mahindra is unable to find a good fibreglass fabricator to make a hard top for the Thar. Beats me how Gypsy can still be offered with Hard top option which actually looks quite nice.
Hi all,
I have a friend in Madras who is a fibreglass and FRP manufacturer...spoke to him this morning about HTs. He is interested and is willing to look into making these.
I saw some pictures in a post (don't remember which one) a while ago of this sectional HT on a wrangler (i think). Does anyone have the link to those. Want to send them to him so he can cost out a prototype and get back to me. If he says he can do it, I can get a list together of people who would be interested and send him the fastener specs as well as dimensions required to fit onto a Thar.
Thanks,
Manas

HAHA that got me!
What an observation sirji!!
I just received a call from a M&M Official who I had mailed regarding factory fitted AC and few other things. He regretted informing me that the THAR Gods have refused my request for Factory fitted AC "For the time being". He also told that they have received similar requests from Rajasthan and they are studying it. Hopefully the A/C version will materialise within 3-4 months.
The concerned official also suggested me to tweet to the Big Boss Anand Mahindra for this.
So all confirmed buyers of THAR, I suggest you to contact your local M&M office with your request.
May be a deluge of mails from all quarters might soften the THAR Gods:D
Cheers
I've been following this thread since the very first post. 11 pages of discussion, which frankly in my sole opinion aren't productive.
Why? Because:
- It's too late to expect mahindra to change it's design. Car is on the production line now.
- As samurai said, atleast for me, i'm happy that it comes with crappy tyres. I'd want to exchange them anyways
- Since the first Thar thread, it was always told that AC would be a dealer fitment option. No use discussing it now.
- Price is high, but we really don't have any say in that matter. No use beating it to death
- Buy the thar and use it for family or friends or single use. Mahindra doesn't care. You go and customize it the way you want. Mahindra is using it's existing parts bin and will give you only what it has. Again, it will not change it's design.
Having said that: I had a superb classic, which was in great condition in stock form. After that i went ahead and modded it and got her into perfect condition. At every Thar thread, i was the person who shouted that i will not buy the thar because (i) it's not a short wheel base and (ii) it looks like any other government car. I loved my classic. However, i need to drive atleast 100 odd kms to the nearest OTR spot and back. And it's boring to do it in the classic. Summer kills you in the classic. So do muck runs. I'd love a good door now. Bigger tyres and PS killed whatever power that she had. Got a great offer for the classic and sold her and am waiting for the thar.
What will i do with the thar? Drive the brand new car to allan's workshop. Designs are all ready. I need that car to look different (sorry, i need image also, not mayapuri bling though). I need AC for sure.
I will still miss my classic, but this is the best compromize i can have. I would love to go to palar, blr, coorg, munnar or north to delhi, rajasthan, maybe leh, etc and need a reliable and fast offroader to get me there.
This is my 2 cents. Now i wait for the official launch. No use discussing anything anymore (atleast things like body design, etc which will not change).

Spot on! +1 to that!

...
I am not for / against providing Immobilizer, I have explained my logic above. I wanted to know from our expert (Star_aqua) whether the hardware / software used in the Electronic stuffs for BS-IV warrant an Immobilizer, is that clear?

Do you understand the concern for security here?
Looks like not, since immobilizers are not 'mandatory in India'!

Disconnect between the marketing team (or whoever in M&M handles that media account) and whatever team you belong to, is it? lol:

Seems like that is all that is going to happen - we keep talking about it.
Regardless, it is too late to talk about the lack of an immobilizer (or for that fact, Ac and PS). Better focus on how to keep it safe once brought.

From the start , BD said that Thar would come with feature to meet the mechanical requirements of the off-roaders (torque, angle, et al) and for specifics like roll-cage and snorkel, there will be the provisions to get it fixed easily, but will have to be done as an add-on.
Which brings to the concern noted by JP1.
About warranty,
- would M&M honor the warranty on related parts even if you do a PS and A/c add-on?
- would the suspension warranty hold good if you change the tires to the ones your like? Not sure if the AT tire is there in the same OE size to meet the varied requirements.
- Snorkel provision is present; so, if snorkel if fixed at M&M authorised center and flooding happens, warranty stands?
- since this is projected as a "off-roader", does M&M plan to tie up with an insurance body to provide coverage for "off-roading"?
