Day four - Saturday, 18th August 2012. Behind the scenes.

On Saturday between events I spent some time wandering in the holding area where the cars and transporters are placed. It was a totally different atmosphere, seeing owners of multi-million dollar cars getting their hands dirty and personally polishing and detailing their prized possessions. Of course there were also professional agents hired by some, and its a thriving industry.





















The Kellner bodied Hispano Suiza, originally ordered by the Maharaja of Alwar, and is seen sporting their trademark fender mounted decorative strips.









This Stutz competed (and won if I'm not mistaken) in the Preservation class (pre war), and I regularly saw the car pottering about town every day.





Outrageous Delahaye was competing in the Saoutchik class.

Like I said before, you see the most amazing lineup of cars on the streets itself. From highend luxury saloons to endearing little lemons like this crossley and Morgan 3 wheeler. (A seperate 'lemons concours' does take place over the week, though I couldn't attend).


















I also met a guy who had brought down 2 of his Beetles - a 56 saloon and a later convertible. The condition of these 2 cars (consistent show winners) could take ANY car at Pebble Beach, I kid you not. Decked out with the rarest of rare accessories, this pair made my day. The convertible incidentally is an original Monterey car, and had full history from delivery note to date.

Day five - Sunday, 19th August 2012. Concours!

I realise that there has been so much posted without me even getting to the main Concours so far. So without further adieu, I give you the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The Concours opens to regular ticket holders only at 10am, in order to give the media a chance for photography. We decided to get there early, around 6, to beat the crowds. We were there by half past six, but apparently that was already too late, we were stuck in a long queu to enter.



The weather was perfect, with alternating spells of sunshine and clouds. We were worried about rain, but I overheard someone say "This is Pebble Beach. The people here are rich enough to postpone the rain!". And right enough, rains eluded us.

I need to take a moment here to say something about this remarkable car and even more remarkable owner - she has had the car since 1949, and today is 102 years old! She still drives the car and carries out routine maintenance herself. She even drove the car at the Tour d'elegance. I missed the opportunity to meet her.

I saw Ratan Tata spending much time keenly going over details of this car. Hope it inspires him to restore his father's XK rumoured to still be languishing somewhere.

At the end before the prize distribution, select cars were called up on stage for a drive through parade, starting with the Maharaja cars. The owners were presented with a bouquet of flowers by pretty ladies dressed in saris, in keeping with the theme. I was late to get there, so missed a good vantage point.
