Bangalore: Boot-mounted cycle carriers need RTO approval

From Bangalore Mirror.

Bangalore Traffic Police seems to have started fining motorists with primarily boot-mounted cycle carriers. The reason is sideways protrusions + obscuring rear number plates.

Fair enough. When I read the title I thought you meant this.

Bicycle mounted sideways will always have side protrusions. Is this mounting system really illegal in India?

See:

For once I agree with the RTO and traffic police. The pic in the above link showing a boot mounted bicycle rack does look dangerous for other road users because of its extensions on either side of the car, especially in Indian driving conditions where margins/gaps are quite small (between 2 vehicles, or even between a vehicle and a pedestrian)

Instead of arguing that "Other vehicles like rickshaws etc carry oversized loads and are let scot free so why not us too", the argument must instead be to start fining them too.

Meanwhile, avid cyclists should perhaps go in for roof mounted bike racks.
