| Making Cannondale Hooligan more Hooligan-ish Here is something you don't see often. Introduced in 2008-9 period, Hooligan wasn't popular because of the price but also because the mini-velo market is quite small compared to regular bicycles. Still, Cannondale persisted and produced Hooligan for almost a decade finally killing it in 2019. By some reports, they produced around 25000 units of it. Most of those were sold in SE Asia, far East and Europe where market for quirky bikes like this is far bigger than in the Americas. Then, at the end of the production these bikes started gathering a small but cult like following and prices started rising. Now years old examples are going for more than they originally retailed. In the USA, these are rare and if one becomes available at reasonable cost, its gone immediately. Some articles and posts on it piqued my interest and I decided to try it myself. After nearly a year's search I finally found one about 200 miles away from me in a different state on FB Marketplace. I didn't skip a beat and arranged to meet with the seller the next day (weekday, took a day off!) - I wasn't going to miss this one, no sir! I even transferred a token amount to seller which is something I NEVER do but I was going to risk everything this time. Fortunately that drive wasn't a waste. The seller was a legitimate guy and met me right on time. He knew the Hooligans were in high demand but he didn't think someone would travel from out of state ![]() The first impressions were excellent. Not a single scratch or paint rub or dent. In fact the owner bought it back in 2016, rode around the cul-de-sac for a couple of times and then never took out of the garage again. The tires had injection nubs on them and the chainstays had plastic wrap on it from factory giving me no reason to doubt him. The tires were flat but I didn't care. I didn't even check if the gear shift was working and handed him rest of the money with a wide grin on my face. This is how it looked on day 1. ![]() Funky Lefty Solo Fatty fork. This is a heavy but interesting looking fork. ![]() Stock configuration - |

| Re: Making Cannondale Hooligan more Hooligan-ish This deserved more responses, so just wanted to send along a thanks and "job well done"... If I lived in a place with smoother roads I'd love to find and build something like this. So quirky and cool, besides actually being functional. A great find, and your enhancing build was very sensible, tasteful, and appealing. I had a 20" folding cycle for awhile, in that case it was more of a neighborhood/boardwalk cruiser... low-end six speed derailleur and heavy - but still was so cool to look at and fun to ride the few times I had it out. Had aimed to keep it but an eager buyer came along, and I certainly can't retain them all. -Eric Last edited by ringoism : 22nd March 2025 at 20:11. |

| Re: Making Cannondale Hooligan more Hooligan-ish I seriously am out of my depth in appreciating the technical nuances beyond a point but this was still a joy to read. I didn’t even know Cannondale had a bike like this. Speaking of one sided front fork though I vaguely recall a hybrid bike from Cannondale that had a single side front fork - the Bad Boy IIRC, which was retailed in India about 10 years or so ago. Not sure if they still sell it here. The aerobars also look really cool on this style of a bike. But as someone who loves my Brompton foldie, this is just SOOO cool. Really tastefully executed build and look forward to seeing more pics of these in different settings, urban or in the wilderness. Last edited by Axe77 : 23rd March 2025 at 12:25. |

I do, however, doubt its ability to cruise long distances. Did a 60 ish km ride and felt exhausted. My plan is to install some sort of carriage and use for short rides only. Quote:
![]() Nicer weather is approaching here, so hopefully I will get a chance to ride more and take photos. Will definitely post them in that other thread ![]() Quote:
![]() P.S> this is a first generation Hooli with Lefty solo non-fatty fork with 1 1/8 fork size which is much easier to replace and also lighter. The first generation also accepted the widest tires. As the years passed, Cannondale kept reducing rear triangle width thereby reducing the max tire width. SRAM 3 speed is equally painful as Shimano Nexus 3 but can be easily replaced with better IGH. However as it is, in stock form, this is a very joyous and fun ride. Last edited by Axe77 : 23rd March 2025 at 12:26. Reason: Minor alignment edit in quoted post.

| Re: Making Cannondale Hooligan more Hooligan-ish Completed a few rides on this fun bike. I had originally set it up for upright, very relaxed riding position with many spacers under the stem as well as handlebars were swept upwards. But against my assumption that wasn't very comfortable for my back or wrists. A tingling sensation in the palms, wrists needing relief, neck spraining it was quite clear the geo wasn't good. At first I reduced the upswept angle of the bars but that didn't help. Next up, slid the stem down by almost an inch and reduced the angle of the bars. The bars are now at same height and angle as my gravel bike. Did a few rounds on "proving ground" track here and felt immediate relief to my wrists. Its funny but riding in a more aggressive position turned out to be more comfortable for me. Came home and cut the steerer by a few mm above an inch. The bars are almost parallel to the ground too. | Re: Making Cannondale Hooligan more Hooligan-ish Microshift makes a super short derailleur especially for folding bikes in case you want to consider that for the future. The only con is cross-compatibility - Velo Orange sells a full kit. |

The other option is Shimano Zee 10 speed SS RD that *might* work with 11 speed road shifters after using the MTB to road adapter for ratio conversion. Right now, I have about 2 inches of ground clearance which looks sufficient for mild gravel rides I do on this bike.
