Hi ICE'ers

Well this one was in the works for a while... The first Autopsyche Wide Body Lancer... she's called the "IMAGE". Well I'm sure you've seen the car in Autocar, the newspapers, and on TBHP. But here's something for you ICE'ers.

Lets begin with the 'Before' stuff... The car was literally a Pioneer showroom on four wheels. Imagine a Pioneer in dash DVD touchscreen, 2 pairs TS20 tweets, 2 Pioneer on-dash Center speakers, 1 pair Pioneer Satellite speakers, 1 pair Pioneer 6975 6x9s, 1 pair Pioneer 2095 10" Coaxes, 2 Pioneer 12" subs in the rear parcel shelf AND 2 more Pioneer 12" sealed subs in the boot. Not to mention a Pioneer EQ + Crossover, another 3way crossover, 4 Sony amplifiers, BOSS caps and cabling of every possible colour.






Rear parcel shelf had been brutally mutilated by earlier installer to accomadate those subs and 6x9s.



Even after miles of wiring was removed we would find yet more stray cables after every layer of carpeting.



The owner wanted a show grade system i.e. non-stealth and could sacrifice the boot. So after stripping the car down, we got to work on the boot. Here you can see the wheel well has been cleaned and damping layer applied. The rubber+butyl mix damping sheets stick much better when heated so we use our hand held industrial grade hot air gun for the job.

Rib cage for sub enclosure constructed. Note the inner braces for structural rigidity. Seen here dropped into the wheel well for measurement check.



Rib cage enclosure gets fiberglass bottom as per wheel well. Audison AudioAZcomp FonoGel liquid dampening used to deaden the enclosure.





FonoGel sprayed on... Turns dark greenish when cures.





FonoTape used to ensure good seal once enclosure's top baffle is secured. FonoTape makes such joints air, water, dust tight. Also note the white absorbant material lining the inner of the enclosure.

Boot test fit. Always pays to check.



Work begins on the rear parcel shelf. We wanted to flush set the Image Dynamics Chameleon component set.

Now on to the doors. Remember I mentioned the doors had 10" Pioneer coaxes stuffed into them. The earlier installer had severely mutilated the panels and we had to reconstruct part of the door panel.









Custom Door Panel inserts nearly finished.





Well did I mention by now we had removed even more stray cables.



New Audison Cabling goes in.







1/0 Guage Audison power cabling. Audison battery terminals.





Battery changed to Optima 75A deep cycle Yellow Top.



Now we move on to the center channel. Obviously, a regular 2" or 4" center wouldnt cut it in a system like this, so... we did a custom center. Note 12v cigarette lighter socket relocated.

Custom center is ready. Check out the CX62 in point source mode. Thats why the're called Chameleons.

Tru Technology amps going in. Also note Audison 1.3 farad caps.



Rear side of amp baffle. See Pioneer processor and Audison SRx2 amp in bridged mode pumping out in excess of 200w cont into 2ohms to the center channel.

Custom subwoofer ring gets Audison neon lighting embedded for stealth lighting.

Mighty iDMAx12 subs get 8g cable for cosmetics and current flow.

Big props to Arush (Autopsyche), Mukul Patel (PPD) and our own Jb for the relentless work ethic, countless days, nights, cuts and bruises involved with this install.

In the end, it is worth all the effort cuz it gets very loud, yet very clean, immaculate imaging, and the bass is to die for... SQ diehards will dirty their pants in this one...

Gunbir/JB, excellent, as usual i've got questions...

a) is there a tweeter for the center channel? If not why not use a coax (is this case a smooth whiizzer cone driver could have worked too).

b) How do you protect the mid-woofers from stray objects?

c) given that you guys took so much trouble a slnated baffle for teh rear drivers would have reduced the bouce of the rear windshield.

Keep it up guys.

a) Yes. There is a 30mm tweeter in the center, mounted coaxially, its the same midbass and tweeter as the fronts and rears (except the rear mids are 5.25").



b) The cosmetic baffles have been designed in a way that we can cover them up in acoustically transparent grill fabric... as and when required. As of now the owner wants it this way...

c) A slanted baffle... we tried that in the design process but it wasnt working out due to several reasons. Anyways, I think we would still have some reflections cuz these drivers have wicked off-axis response.

Mukul Patel of Patel Auto, the dealer who installed this with Jb, is an ace installer. His experience ranges from Bentleys, Porsches, Ferraris to Lancers. And despite having more than 50 tech staff on the workfloor, he does it himself. He charges 20% of the system cost for all his installs.

Navin,

1. The coax's will never sound as good as components, thats why we have used component speaker as center speaker has a very important role in multichannel system

2. The midwoofers are protected by the trim rings and the phase plug itself. Until and unless an idiot really wants to mess with them.

3. Increasing the slant of rear parcel shelf does not help at all. You cannot stop reflection of the rear windscreen no matter what you do. The only thing that is of little help is the roll up type sunscreen but then it screws the look too.
Moreover it aim the rears speakers towards the front which will affect the imaging of the front stage.

Note : The capacitors used in the car are Audison 0.8 Farad.

Well of course the equipment is top notch and deserved this kind of install. But... do you know that at the Auto Expo... it was commonly percieved by people that this car had been installed abroad. When told it was all done here, people got that look of disbelief on their faces.

Navin the tweeter is not using the cone as a waveguide as it is sitting in front of the midrange cone hence in a different plane. In true point source drivers, the sources of the HF and LF should be in same plane for HF to use LF cone as waveguide (horn). There also a small waveguide is used to disperse the HF in the bigger LF cone.

Oh yes JB I see it you have to look closely to see that the tweeter is about 3/4" inch in front of the mid. black on black makes for difficult contrast.
