10" Vs 12" Subs

Hi all,

What difference does it make having a 10" or a 12" sub in a car. Now for instance, I hook up a Lancer with two 12" subs and another Lancer with two 10" subs, will it make any difference bewteen these 2 cars?

Its just not size of the woofer, its the quality and size of enclosure, quality and power of the amp, wiring and the car a hatch or sedan or suv.

Iam looking at fixing 2 subs for the Lancer, yet to decide on a Alpine or a JBL. Please suggest the amp that would match for the respective subs rated by you. Finally, the size that I should go for....

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pro...s_id/3892.html -> SWR-1022D

The model u have chosse is a complete mixture of diff variety...

First if u are going to compare some thing u must have some similarites in between the alpine ur selected are 2ohms and the jbl 10 inch are 4 ohms dvc and the 12 jbl is a svc. Man first select what config of vc do u need

1) 4 ohms dvc
2) 2 ohms dvc
3) 4 ohms svc

Because this will effect the chossing of the amp. because if u selected a two pcs 2 ohms dvc then it can be wired to a single amp at 2 ohms but if u take 4 ohms dvc sub then the juice of the amp could not be taken out because u cannot wire two 4 ohms dvc sub to a single amp with 2 ohms setup so u will be needing 2 amps......

I think u have gettin my point. Also the 10 inch jbl is the a very heavy sub as compared to ur 12 inch jbl . so please select the nearest which u get......

Partly right, partly wrong. Like LBM says.. too many variables. Assume all external factors are to remain constant, the performance of the subs would depend on which 10" you are pitting against which 12". Even if the 10 and 12 in consideration are from the same series of the same brand, it is quite possible that the subs may be greatly different in performance. On the other hand, on several occassions, manufacturers make 10s and 12 from the same series with identical motors and voice coil size. Hence only the diaphragm is larger and the basket. In this case, the power handling is the same, only you get higher sensitivity because of a higher radiating surface area and hence more bass for the same amount of power input. Two subs from different lines or brands would be radically different in the way they perform, the enclosure requirements etc.

If generalized, 10s should be more popular with someone who doesn't want extremely low bass (a 10 would have to travel more than a larger sub to produce lower frequencies at the same spl, and hence need more amplification power to get this going in a small enclosure). This does not mean that there are no 10s that can do 20Hz from a small sealed enclosure, but just that they'd need greater power to do it as loud as a comparable 12, 15 or 18.

I agree.

And Do not understand why you have selected a 10" from the GTi series and the 12" from the power series. They are 2 entirely diffferent subs. GTi are competition series subwoofers.
