LAst OT post, if I had said Ich bin nicht deutsch, it would have defeated the purpose.
You can't walk upto somebody and say "I do not know English at all, please talk in some other language". However you can say "Me no English"

Looks like it's a prerequisite to learn that foreign language (German?) for those who are interested in enclosures

Nope, all you have to do is put a babelfish in your ear.

Well will all this talk about enclosures I have more or less decided is avoid boxes altogether in my next speaker. Boxless peakers have been around for eons. One of my frist expereinces with one was the Dahlquist DQ10 that an uncle owned in Canada. We spent the better part of my summer holidays in 1976 modifying this magnificient beast.

The new speaker will also be essentially be crossover less meaning that the idea is to use a fullrange. For critical use the speaker will be used as such. For parties and higher SPLs a OB woofer (a la Jamo 909) and tweeter (maybe a dipole pair) will be integrated. Using individual amps and a bit of trickery should allow this.

Can I use a normal 8" or 10" sub without a box and just mounted on a MDF tray like Coaxials are. In what way will the sound be different from the "Ported box"?

that is called a free air install. It will be boomier than a sub in a box.

it will be IB install for this you need the woofer which is meant to be installed free-air. or the sound of the sub will be bad and the output will be quite less.

and yes it will sound quite different from a ported box. there will be no punch in the music and but the low end will be there.

Hehehehe, My ice is as given below

Headunit Pio MP3 cd
Pio eq 6500 X 2
Pio 12" subs X4 (2 nos in bass reflex enclosures, 2 nos in 3rd order Bandpass enclosures)
BOSE condense speakers 4 nos (rear)
JBL door speakers 4 nos
Pio TS S20 tweets 4 nos (up front)
12" LCD on roof.
12 cd changer

The Juice for these spks come from Pio 5500 (yes, very very old timer) Pio 944, Sony 90X4 RMS (this too is pretty old forgot the number) and a Sony 444 (for the door spks)
The Sony 90X4 drives my BOSE & TS S20s. 5500 drives the bass reflex woofers, and the 944 drives the 3rd order bandpass subs. Mostly I listen with one of my eq turned off coz otherwise my mids are very low. But when I want to Thumb, I turn em on and neighbours starts to complain. All these on my Safari, otherwise a normal ride. But with no boot space.

Next upgrade will be to a carputer, for which all the components are ready. 160GB HD space, required smps & power invertor, VGA convertor for replacing the monitor with the current 12" LCD, wireless track ball( to be incorporated to Gear Shift) and foldaway keyboard. All I now need is time to fix all up. I sure hope to fix the carputer before this year is over. And I have got to figure out a place to keep the CPU( its in a small samsung made case) retaining the 4 seater aspect of SAFARI. I have already no Boot space whatsoever. ANY IDEAS GUYS!!!!

an old but working laptop with USB hard drive (old laptops had very small hard drives) can work too.
