Adding AUX input to the Mercedes W211's Audio 20

Have been using a W211 E200 Kompressor for the last 2 years. The car originally came with the bluetooth phone connection using a nokia 6310i. The audio system does not have an aux input and is only supplied with a radio, 6 cd changer and single cd player.

The phone will work with a 6310i phone but you have to use a separate phone and divert calls from your main handset. Wanting to retain the originality of the system I went out and bought a 6310i. That did not work so well. It was bothersome connecting and diverting calls etc. Then I went and got the Viseeo puck bridge from ebay. It cost 14000 shipped to my house and worked right out the box. The call quality is excellent, but caller ID and telephone book transfer is very spotty. But I have been managing with this for 2 years now.

The bluetooth system only supports call audio on these audio 20 systems. You cannot play music through BT and there is no aux. There have been constant requests from my kid these last 2 years and I have been putting it off all this time.

The options for an aux connection are very limited.

1. Get an Android based generic system from China which has everything including the can bus connection for steering controls and display and lose the originality of the system. Cost was 35000 rupees when I started looking and it has now dropped to around 18000 rupees shipped to India.

2. Buy an adaptor plate for the fascia and put any branded double din system. Cost of adaptor plate is around 35 usd on ebay/ali express plus the cost of the double din head unit. Totally about 20000 rupees.

3. A Russian hack where you connect the aux cable to the single cd point on the pcb and run the wire out into the cup holder.

Yesterday 1st day of the new year 2018 I decided to take the plunge, make my kid happy and get the job done

Option selected was option 3 above

Reasoning was it costs nothing to do. My friend runs a professional car audio installation shop and has done a lot of work on the W211's Audio 20. He had never done this before. My reasoning was that if it failed I could take the plunge and do either option 1 or 2 or nothing at all if it failed.

So armed with many youtube videos I went to my installer.

The system was out in a jiffy and the whole job took 30 minutes to complete. You have to be very careful while taking off the system and you need to move the gearbox cover, ashtray and cd changer to get to the main system. Soldering the rca left and right wires to the points on the board is easy enough and care should be taken to ensure the right and left is checked on the cable before zapping them on. The ground wire also needs to be zapped to the body as shown.

You need to burn a silent cd and insert it in the single cd slot. That's the input you select and voila it plays very well. I tried a blank cd but that shows up as an error.

Here are some pics of the installation
