Alliance partners Renault, Nissan & Mitsubishi have collaborated with Google to offer Android-based infotainment systems on their models from 2021.



As part of the technology partnership, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi will use Google's Android operating system in their infotainment systems, with built-in features like Google Maps with turn-by-turn navigation and access to the Google Play Store. Users will be able to use the infotainment system to answer calls and send texts, control media, search information over the internet and manage vehicle functions using Google Assistant.

Each brand will have a unique interface and specific features and will offer integrated cloud-based systems as well. Alliance Intelligent Cloud will provide next-gen infotainment systems with secure connectivity and will facilitate over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. The system will be compatible with devices running on other operating systems as well.

This is a HUGE victory for Google. Yes, car makers have started offering Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, but for the OS, they don't want to give Google control and prefer to do it themselves. In fact, they've been very fearful of Google; Audi, BMW & Mercedes even went out and bought Nokia HERE to prevent Google's domination.

Let's not forget, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi combine have top volumes worldwide. It's not a small group (like say, Volvo), so this will have larger implications on the industry.

It might just set the precedent for other car makers to follow. I'm personally happy as I love Android & I love Google .

"It’s a real threat for the entire car industry to give the keys to the kingdom to a third party with its own strategy and tactics," Chief Executive Officer Harold Goddijn said in an interview, citing concerns on privacy, client data and the loss of control on the part of the carmakers.

Shares in TomTom have tumbled over 25 per cent this week, after Renault SA, Nissan Motor Co, and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. announced they would integrate Google’s Android operating system in their car dashboards, despite an existing relationship with TomTom and traditional wariness by car companies of big tech platforms.
