Blaupunkt Head-Unit with Android Auto in my Maruti-Suzuki Ignis

We recently purchased a new Maruti Suzuki Ignis Sigma on 7th January 2021. Being a bare bone model it needed some ICE installment. The Dealership gave an quotation for 6 inch Sony system. But the look and installment in seen on other cars were very crude with large panel gaps. Went through multiple reviews on Teambhp, other websites and Youtube. A budget of ₹25k was fixed for and decent branded android stereo which would double up as a reversing camera monitor. Generic and other "Desi" stereos were excluded for questionable sound output and reliability. Ignis being a "Urban SUV" has a highly place rear windshield with large blindspot while reversing.

Purchased a Blaupunkt Keylargo 9 inches for around ₹20k with the glossy black mounting and wiring harness in a offline shop.
The speakers were purchased on Amazon.in.
Front Infinity speakers:https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B01...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Rear Sony speakers:https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B01...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The Sony speakers from the Appario retail that I got first time were definitely used, with rusted connectors and discoloured tweeters. The replacement was ordered and received new ones the second time.
The rearview camera of a generic make is installed by the local accesory shop for ₹1000.

As many reviews mention slowness of the android system due to low 2GB ram, I had to somehow get an Android auto functionality which uses ram and processor of the phone and display of the head unit. Had a carlinkit purchased 2 years back for other car but was still unused.

Had Planned a trip to Goa and decided to put the system to use along with the new Ignis. I used google maps for navigation and Amazon music for music. Waze and Jio Saavn were also tested but performed poorly. The Google maps showed more accurate results along with real time traffic conditions. Amazon music mostly streamed live music using data from phone In ghat sections of Amboli and Chorla(return) the pre-downloaded songs on phone kept us entertained. There were almost no glitches in our 10+ hours of journey through the Carklinkit.

The Keylargo with its glossy case and no gaps looks almost as good as OEM system in higher ALPHA model of Ignis. The lack of physical buttons does bother me and planning to get them some time soon. The music is crisp with good treble for us basic audiophiles. The ignis too impressed with its smooth, refined petrol engine along with great ride quality.

I guess it is a combination of both RAM and processor. I have a Foxfire System with 2GB of RAM on my other car, the City, while it is not very fast, I find it comfortable to use. I guess the presence of a Quad Core processor helps. Can you install the CPU-Z software on your Head Unit and check the Processor details?

I am comfortable with Amazon Music and voice commands now and do not see the need for physical buttons.

Congrats on your new car! And welcome to the Ignis family. The car that I absolutely hated when launched but now I own one and love it to bits!

I own the Zeta AMT and would have definitely picked up the Sigma if it came with AMT. The price difference between Delta AMT and Zeta AMT was very less compared to what all extra that Zeta offered hence went with that.

The touchscreen system also sealed the deal in favor of Zeta and looking at your setup I can tell you that it looks sweet!

The stock one has large bezels which seem scratch prone. This one looks great.

Enjoy your ride! Just one tip, the black taping for window frame is the only thing required in Sigma to lift its look, rest all is perfect.

Congratulations on your new Ignis. It’s an underrated car and by a huge margin. I own Zita AMT, purchased in 2017 and enjoying driving it thoroughly.
I have been incrementally upgrading car’s ICE one item at a time every year.

First to get upgraded were stock Speakers.
Upgraded to Infinity Reference REF-6522ix Coaxial Car Speakers, both front and rear.
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B01DSIKGJA/?tag=tbhp0e-21
Purchased it from local dealer at same cost.

Sound quality had improved but it was evident that the main Head-unit is underpowering the speakers by a huge margin. Sound would start distorting quiet early and was just clear but bit unbalanced and speakers begged for more power.

Second upgrade was to add Sound Damping sheet. This made huge difference in the audio output + isolation. 1.5 sheets per door. Half on the inside and one full sheet on the door.

Recently upgraded the main unit to Blaupunkt Keylargo 970.

Sound quality improved like by 100% to what was originally being played. Bluetooth works fab and so does USB. Not tried USB Video as it is not my use case.
But this introduced some more complexity. Pure android auto would have worked wonders.
1. Needs phone tethering to download map, traffic data before starting the journey.
2. Bluetooth does not connect automatically; it keeps asking if there is a need to connect to Bluetooth.
3. Data tethering does not remain connected to your phone for more than 10 minutes. On long journeys I found it annoying when traffic data is old and needs new connection.
4. Bluetooth audio woks best instead of using any app.
5. There is a option to add a microSD card for offline maps, but there is very little guidance given in the manual how to use it.
6. Downloaded offline maps on google maps will have to manually keep updating it every month. If there was a way to have offline maps of entire country on a SD card would have worked wonders.
7. There is a app which mirrors mobile screen on the system but it is not very easy to use. If the phone rotates from landscape to portrait so will the display on screen.
To conclude I would say 100% happy with the better audio output and the features but the additional complexity is something that should be addressed in the next android software update *Hopefully

For all your problems from 1-4 and 6-7 Carlinkit overcomes all these.

The product is similar to following link. It also supports Wireless Carplay but we are all Android family.https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/car-e...-page-2-a.html (CarPlay2Air.com: Convert wired Apple CarPlay to wireless. EDIT: Major disappointment (page 2))

Tried Wireless Android auto with it but settled and happy with wired one as it simultaneously charges the phone. Wireless Android auto doesn't work at all. A wireless charger could solve the charging issue but expecting one to come as factory fitted in a Sigma is a hyperbole.

Had gone through your detailed review but was apprehensive about the reliability

Surely will do it soon. But I guess the headunits cannot match processing speeds of modern smartphones. If you have an android phone priced on par with 4/6gb headunits presently available in market, I guess smartphones would perform much better than that headunit itself.

Agree to that point and what suits one person may not suit another. I prefer the native Head Unit usage for two main reasons:

1. Free up the Smartphone during travels - a phone is an important device and I would not want the battery on the phone to run out on long drives - so from that perspective I prefer the HU to do its work. Prior to this I have done several trips with my Phone mounted on the dash with a stand - happy those days are gone now

2. The Head Unit I have has a 4G SIM as well - so I stopped using USB Drive filled with songs now. It is all Amazon Music and the Alexa commands are so versatile that I prefer that more. Also I can create my own playlists on Amazon Music which will play songs of my choice.

On a different topic outside of the Car Audio, you could also go thru my Ignis Ownership Report here > (Uptown Red Racer - The Maruti Ignis Delta 1.2L Automatic comes home)

Can you please share the product link? if it solves so many of my listed issues then it could be worth the money!

I had purchased it on Aliexpress two years back. Unsure if they provide the services after the recent Indian government app ban.

I would suggest that you give a try for Head Unit Re-loaded app. It mimics Android Auto.

Please view the below YouTube which explains the purpose and usage of the app quite well

Thanks this kind of works!. But its not as straight forward. If you are using FM radio and using this software it gets tricky to get back to mobile navigation.
It is a good solution none the less.
