Bimmertech MMI is running fine and no issues whatsoever with service.

However, just wanted to point out that now the headunit replacement is also available on Bimmertech. I had checked with my VIN. So you can consider that too but it’s double the price!

Background: my close friend has a 2017 BMW X1. There’s no inbuilt carplay or android auto. While there are many aftermarket adapters available for wireless Carplay, they only work when the HU supports Carplay which is not the case here.

Need suggestions from experts here on the following -
a. Any good aftermarket HU or other components/adapters to enable Carplay? The original screen doesn’t supports touch so this might be a long shot.
b. Any option to upgrade HU to newer X1 models which might enable a host of other features as well

They are much more cost effective than Bimmer Tech, etc. If you don't mind, can you please share an approximate of how much Upshift Autos charged you, but more importantly, did they know what they were doing, or they were a little clueless? Any more info on the fitting process would be much appreciated!

Super! Installation issues (wire-cutting, coding etc.) or any other showstoppers with shipping or Customs? Some live pics if possible?

No wire cutting, it’s plug and play. However, the tough part is putting the module inside. Check some YouTube videos and just follow them. You would have to find a place in the bottom right side corner to put the module. No show stoppers as such, but one important thing was that they told me the ‘mic’ cable was irrelevant, but since I did not attach that cable, I have to switch on my iPhone from ‘BMW X5’ to ‘CarPlay’ every time I get a call - this part is a bit buggy, but sort of living with it.

Considering the actual price and how BimmerTech and other companies are looting, this seems like a good deal. Just the mic part is annoying.

My DIY skills is restricted to plugging in my OBD reader .

Just to clarify, this box allows you to retain your original BMW OEM screen and simply overlays the new interface on it?

Will you also post some pics of the live screens? I am now sorely tempted!

That's correct @itwasntme.

It was a challenge, but trust me - I am no mechanic either, but somehow was motivated to do it. I don't think it should be a problem. Just browse some YouTube videos and take up the challenge!

You just have to long press the 'menu' button, and you would enter the other RoadTop interface, which has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Screen Mirroring, etc. No impact on BMW OEM screen.
