Nope, they are not bad at all. They usually are good enough, if they are being powered by the HU. It is a good idea to upgrade the wire if an amp is used (if budget allows). The speakers are likely to sound somewhat better with an amp when the wires are upgraded.

Good choice of equipment, How much did you pay for the stuff ?
Just a personal opinion, you could have probably got better speakers for the price you paid maybe. Though have not heard the new DS series speakers, but till the last year's ES series were crappy for the price.
Another Issue with kicker is Bangalore/Mumbai markets are teeming with fake KS and ES series speakers, and for a consumer it's almost impossible to differentiate between that and the real deal.

@ Blueraven - Don't know the actual prices yet. The whole setup was done on a temporary basis as I've never used Kicker before. I'll audition the setup for a week before I decide. But, the prices would be 1k /2k over equivalent JBLs.
As for fake stuff, I've no idea. But well, I do trust my installer.

P.S. How do I find out if the Kickers are genuine?

You could check with Kamal Dhingreja of Preeti Trading Corporation, Mumbai. I believe he is the distributor for Kicker.

I don't believe the Fakes are in for the new DS series, you will not usually find fakes for latest year's series for foreign brands (except for Pioneer and Sony) You will see brand new Fanatic Series component and coaxial speakers by rockford in Bangalore which are 100% A Grade fakes. Have seen some of that in few reputed shops. Those speakers went out of production about 3 to 4 years ago, Thing is it sounds pretty okay too, so consumer is not able to catch. I have seen a load of fake KS series speakers selling at dirt cheap wholesale rates, which is impossible even if they were selling in grey, if it was the original product. They are actually cheaper than ES series speakers which are supposed to cost much cheaper. However, there is difference in finishing, but that only a person who has sold quite few KS series originals can recognise. Even Dealers can duped at times.
