Motorola recently did some innovation with Bluetooth Audio called HD bluetooth Audio.

I have their Motorola S9 bluetooth headset which is now replaced by S9-HD.

Motorola MOTOROKR S9-HD Bluetooth Stereo Headset - Mobile Tech Review

the motorola page on the same is not opening up. Maybe we can expect the same in cars pretty soon.

If following site is to be believed, SBC used as the mandatory codec for A2DP has quite a good potential.
Audio quality of encoders at 320 kbit/s - SoundExpert
If used at 370+ kbps, it should be comparable to mp3 or aac @320kbps. Even at 328kbps, it is close to mp3@192kbps. A glance at A2DP 1.0 specs indicated that SBC must be supported at upto 512kbps/stereo by the "sink" device. But the spec is very liberal towards "source" devices, which are allowed to support only one possible bitrate (which can be mono as well), which may or may not really deserve (IMHO) to be called "advanced" audio streaming. So, in many bad reviews about A2DP SQ, looks like source devices must have been culprits, not sinks. Those may not support high enough bitrates due to computational power, battery life demands (just a guess).

Also came across a few people being able to stream music even without A2DP capability, including a case in this thread as well. Looks like that is done through "handsfree" or "bluetooth audio" which is nothing but the speech codec used for phone conversations. Obviously, SQ can not be expected anything better than "miserable" in these cases!

So which system is preferable. I saw a Sony (gasp!) system in BLR installed in a friend's car for 10k B/w incl two sets of coax.

Which are the other budget (~8-12k) BT models?

Isn't it mentioned in the same line to which you initially replied?
