You've answered your own question John. I know what you're talking about, old tape HUs like supra had a connector at the back and a handle in the front.
You could yank out the HU and carry it with you. (Ugh, if I may add)
These HUs were designed to be taken off the car battery for a long time. It would be an annoying thing if you took the HU home, brought it back the next morning and lost all your settings.
SO they had a small battery inside to preserve the memory.
Modern HUs are not designed to be disconnected, only the front fascia is removed. So there is no need for a memory battery inside.
Downside is that when you service the car and disconnect the battery, it's time to set everything again. And it's the time to disco (lalalalala) it's the time to disco (lalalalala) chalo baba I'll khisko........ it's the time to disco. |
