Placement of speakers in a CAR / SUV

I'd like to understand how a 9 speaker setup like that in the Outlander is placed in a car or SUV ? How are the speakers placed, to get similar sound stage for all passengers ?

Is it :
2 speakers ( components ) in each of front door= 2x2=4
2 speakers ( components ) in each of rear doors = 2x2=4
1 sub
totalling to 9

or is it :

components in front doors = 2x2 =4
center speaker = 1
2 coax speakers in rear door = 1x2=2
1 sub =1
2 rear surrounds ?? = 2x2
leading to a 7.1 type of setup ?

How effective would a 7.1 type setup be in a car /suv ?

I have basic understanding of speaker placement/ sound stage etc,. in a Hometheatre, but such placements may not hold good in a automobile.

Any suggested reading on this ?

thanks

I would also like to hear other people on this though yes setup 1 you have defined here is correct its one one comp set in each door along with a sub in the boot. though I've always found the onboard amps lacking punch even then. which is true for the expensive montero too.

Stock ICE will remain Stock.
Unless it is an Audi or something for that instance.

I'd always take
4 speakers( 2 compos up front and 2 compos / coaxs at the back)
Sub(s)
A 4 channel amp for the speakers and a mono for the sub(s)

From what I saw in the Volvo XC90, their 8 speaker system is
2 way components in each front door
co-axials in each rear door
tweeter on each rear pillar
4x40W amp

I don't think subwoofers come as standard. These are generally optional add-ons, in which case they are powered subs (having their own amp). The Volvo has an 8" sub powered by a 140W amp, placed behind the load compartment's left panel.

In case of a 9 speaker setup, I guess a center speaker is added to the Volvo configuration.

In the top end Volvo with a 12 speaker Dynaudio setup, they have:
3-way system in the front doors
2-way center speaker
Co-axials in the rear doors
tweeters on the rear pillars
5x130W digital Class D amplifier
This features Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound and a digital sound processor.

B pillar is between your front seat and rear seat. C pillar is the support behind rear seats.
In case of a Station wagon would placement of 2 speakers coaxial or mono have an effect on improving sound quality if placed on the rear hatch door, like they have it in the Scorpio? I already have 2 speakers 4" ones in the stock location in my Marina, which is just beneath the rear quarter glass window.
