this is little difficult to make out which is better or not class AB or class D,as both have there own sound quality, take it like this, take any brand which has both ab and d models and compare them on the same sub ab running @4 ohms and d running @ 2 or 1 ohms i think the ab will sound better as sq wise and d will be more louder and will make the sub sound with more control as compared to class ab.but there will a difference but not everyone can judge it.

i was saying so strictly on a theoretical basis. Sometimes one amp is better than 2

guys, any suggestions for class D and class AB amps that can pump more than 500W on to a sub at 4 Ohm or 1 ohm?

I think what people sometimes forget about one important difference between the two is that a class D amp is designed for providing sustained power over a narrow field making them better suited for subs which require this power. whereas since the AB class are more widespectrum there is more leeway in the power circuit design. the AB class are meant for sustained power also but have a lower threshold. for basic application a class AB is fine. BUT for a higher power sub or a person who demands more from his sub should preferably go for class D. its the more sensible option.

Yes there IS! Audison made (makes?) 3 channel amps. They had a SRx 3 for sure and also an LRx 3 (maybe). Cannot recall a VRx 3 channel amp, but AFAIK, there was a VRx 6 channel amp!

DLS makes 3 channel amps too. they have the current DLS A5 which does 85*2 +300*1@ 4 ohms.
this makes it a perfect amplifier for a lot of 2+1 setups.
the DLS XD-30 and the current CA-31 are also 3 channel amplifiers

Re: Difference between a Monobloc and 2 Channel Amplifier for the Subwoofer?

digging this old thread again.

after reading through the posts i am now quite not sure what difference will the mono make if i power the same sub that is currently being powered through a bridged channel on a 4 channel amp.

the amp here is JBL 75.4 which produces 284watts RMS @ 4ohms.
The subwoofer is Ground Zero MK2 300 watts RMS and is a 4 ohm single voice sub.

Whenever i switch the amp switch to mono mode the subwoofer doesnt sound musical and seems to miss out the bass at lower frequencies.

When i switch it back to stereo the sub becomes musical.

Now if i buy a mono class D amp, pumping out say same 284watts rms what difference will it make ?

Also if the class d mono amp is having a bit of less power like 250watts how will it score against the stereo amp above?
