Can a GPS replace the HU? What about Preouts etc?

(Mod Disclaimer: 1.Searched, but couldnt find a thread that deals with this
2.I think its more ICE related than just accessories)

Have been thinking of replacing my stock Octavia Alpine Unit with a 2 Din system, but then thought why not a MapMyIndia or something like that?

So my questions:
  1. Can the MapMyIndia replace my headunit if I`m ok without a CD Player?
  2. Do these units have enough RCA or Preouts or whatever is required to connect an AMP and woofer?
  3. Will there be any noticeable decrease in sound quality
  4. Would the GPS fit in the 2DIN slot that the Octy has?

1. GPS units come only with a headphone jack, IIRC.
2. No pre-outs
3.Not all of them even have stereophonic sound.
4. an unit with a 7" screen might fit inside.

I`m not too keen on a CarPC, (happy with internet on my phone/laptop!) But, can a CAR pc connect to an amplifier?

Yes, it can be connected to the amp using the 3.5mm to RCA cables.

Yes. You can use that 3.5mm to RCA. but you need to check the Line output voltages on that device and Line Input voltages on AMP. Also there is no separate Jack for Sub.

Ok, so in that case, is the best solution to retain the Alpine, connect the GPS via aux in and use both in Tandem? But wouldnt that be a messy install with stuff sticking out and so on?

Better choice would be to buy integrated GPS + HU.

It comes with 7" touchscreen, fits in 2 DIN space and can run almost any map. Costs 15 - 20k.

There is a model available on classified:

Team-BHP Classifieds - 7" Car CD/VCD/DVD player with GPS Bluetooth USB - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds

Saw similar HUs at ICE shops here. Sound quality is good. I have a basic setup (Pio 5950 + JBL 4" + JBL 6x9 Speakers) and HU worked well in that setup. Did not buy that so do not have first hand experiance.
