Alpine Type-R SPR-17S component speakers - Reviews/opinions sought

Type: 6.5" component speakers

RMS: 110w

PMPO: 330w

Others: Silk Dome Tweeters, 2 way hybrid layered pulp woofer cone

After a lot of deliberation, I've decided to go ahead with the following component set for planned ICE in the Verna. The amp chosen is the Infinity Kappa 4, and SQ is paramount.

Requesting Gurus for reviews/user experiences of the component set. Here's a pic:

Thank you. That particular link you gave had the Alpines more as part of a shopping list, rather than any precise review. And as for searching, you do realize that the number of hyphens and abbreviations in the name (Type-R SPR 17S) makes a thorough search impossible under the site's restrictions.

Please understand, a detailed and long term review is what I'm looking for here. Has no one used these speakers before?

Nitrous, predatorwheelz has already confirmed these as the components he will be purchasing for his ICE quest. He just wants a good review.

Also unless there is a big enough reason, I don't he will look at other components.

So really all Predator wants to know if these components are good.

Alpine SPR series has usually been recived well so I would not be worried. There might be other speakers in the same price range that are just as good but the Alpines are good - it just that at this level listener's tastes can determine which speaker is preferred.

@Nitrous Anna - On a milder note, I don't have any fixed budget in mind, though I can't afford something really exotic . These speakers were chosen after a lot of deliberation, and right now all I'm looking at is a detailed review.

That said, any other suggestion/feedback from you is most welcome.

What factors/features tilted the scale in favour of this set?

Alpine Type-R

Hi Predator

I have installed these components recently in my Getz. To give you a brief about my setup.

HU - Alpine 9887
Amp - Focal Solid4 75w X 4 Channels @ 4 Ohms
Mono - JBL
Woofer - Kicker CVR- DVC
Front Components - Alpine Type -R 17s
Rear Components - Boston S60

The Alpines have replaced the Bostons which were in the front, the bostons replaced Kicker Component in the rear.

There is substantial difference in the SQ, the Bostons used to distort if played hard, the low end bass was very feeble compared to the Alpines. I have not changed any settings so far on the Amp as well as the HU after the swap.

Plan to do that in the coming weeks and shall update further.

Hi Speed-Freak, there's one more question I want to ask. In most reviews, people have written that the speakers sound brilliant only if you adequately power them. A RMS output of at least 100w is recommended. You are running a 110w RMS component with a 75w Amp. Are the speakers being able to perform adequately?

As a counter question, my setup will run these components powered by an amp that puts out 125W RMS. Will it be perfect, or too much for the speakers to handle?

Lastly as chncar said - How much did these components cost?

It always adviced to have a better rating amp than the rating of the comps. This makes a detailed and stress free sound, so you are good with 125rms feeding 110rms comps.
Also as someone else asked you this, what made you pick this comps than compared to others in market?

Why choose thee, and to Luccent or not to Luccent?

Well, now that 2 people have asked me this question, let me divulge the secret

My setup planning started with the amp. I had a budget of 20K, and wanted the best 4 channel amp within that budget. After plenty of R&D for a Class D/Class AB 4 channel amp, I decided to go for the Infinity Kappa 4. Class D, 125 w per channel. (Its a different story that I had to source the IK4 from US in order to fit into the budget )

Once the amp was decided, it was time to look for component speakers that could handle that kind of power output. Basically 100w plus RMS speakers within a budget of 15K. Most components matching my requirements were above that budget, or too bright. Ultimately I shortlisted this and the Illusion Luccents. Both are not too bright, both use silk dome tweeters.

(FYI, I haven't bought the Alpines as yet. But the Alpine distributor in Kolkata has given me a killer deal, so in probability I'll go for them over the Luccent).

I thought it was supposed to be the other way round i.e. speakers more powerful than the amp, just to be safe so that no speaker gets blown.

Anyway im running Type R components and ovals of a Focal Solid 4 amp, it is very loud, without distorting. So I dont think we should go only by RMS numbers.
