Non-commercial Buses in India

Dear friends;

I searched all of Team BHP but could not find thread on the non commercial buses. Here are two of them.

First one is a mobile library from Bangalore. Can anyone identify the bus model (Ashley model)

I think the next one is some kind of private limousine. Please clarify

A bus belonging to Kerala Motor Vehicle Department. This is used for training purposes

Others please add more

Jimmy, the first should be a Viking, evident from the grille since BTS(BMTC) as well as KSRTC had this in their fleet back then.

This is a lecture hall on wheels for imparting safety related training and is equipped with all audio visual projection system and a generator. This is donated to the Department of Factories and Boilers, Kerala State by the Public Sector Cochin Shipyard Ltd and is built on an Ashok Leyland chassis.

I somehow feel it is a Volvo make rather than a Ashok Leyland. Could it be a Volvo body on a Ashok Leyland chasis?!

The Windshield, Wipers do give an impression of a Volvo.

Re: Non-commercial Buses in India

Its an Ashok Leyland itself. Built by Ojes Coach Builders, Kothamangalam. This bus is usually seen in Industrial areas across Kerala, giving training to ordinary workers on issues like use of helmets, gloves etc. Its a very good initiative by Govt. of Kerala

Re: Non-commercial Buses in India

I am wondering, is it possible to register such big vehicles for personal use, or they have to be yellow plate?
I am unable to find any "caravan" or "camper van" kind of vehicles in India. I do not think MV act defines such class of vehicles.

Well, I have the same doubt. This past week, there was a review of a caravan-ish car (modified in India!) on Times now. Link - http://www.timesnow.tv/videoshow/4414865.cms

Here you can clearly see the white plates. I am guessing it might have been registered as an import since we don't get the Hilux pickup here (on which it's built). But then, isn't it illegal to modify a registered car to such an extent?

Facebook page of the car.

See the third picture in the opening post where the MV Department bus has white plates and therefore it appears to be an acceptable practice.

Actually, the Motor vehicle rules determine the acceptance of a vehicle as legally acceptable based on numerous standards. If the vehicle can adhere to this set, then I guess it can get the registration done.
Now the difference is, a manufacturer has already made these compliant in his vehicle and hence in stock condition this is legally acceptable.
But in the case of anything non stock or built like the above buses, the RTO has to approve the same based on the compliance checklist.

Was able to get one such MVR checklist here:
