AutoTram Extra Grand : World’s Largest Bus @ 256 Passengers

Came across this news item today in yahoo.

World's largest bus carries 256 passengers

As per the news
Quote:
AutoTram® Extra Grand is developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Traffic and Infrastructure Systems. Considered as the longest bus in the world, it is nearly 31 meters long, has four steering axles and can carry 256 passengers. Combining the capacity of a small train with the maneuverability of a bus, the vehicle runs mostly on electric power.

It'll find applications in BRTS too (only in proper BRTS, not half-minded attempts like in Delhi or Pune).

Ahmedabad BRTS is expected to receive Corona Articulated low-floor buses (18M length) sometime shortly.

+1 to this.

On a second thought, it will be too much of exercise to get this monster turn in any city intersections. I have seen the mess created by vestibule buses in Bangalore.

What they achieved with making such a long bus? In India in normal bus 256 people can travel easily . They could have taken clue from India and could have saved lots of money.

Jokes apart: I think we do not see future of such buses in India as per present road condition. But somehow our Bangalore's BMTC uses two bogie buses and all of them having smashed back.

I still get shocked at the very thought of having to follow a vestibule bus through city roads in Bangalore - it just crawls along blocking every turn and delaying traffic at every signal - BMTC's craze for "Excellent" mileage is further slowing these buses.

On a side note, BMTC is to get shorter AC Low Floor buses to run city services - it seems BMTC is scared of the 12M Volvo monsters running through smaller city roads.
