Scania inaugurates first manufacturing facility in India

Scania Commercial Vehicles India inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in India today.

Scania has announced the plans to manufacture about 2,500 heavy haulage trucks besides 1,000 inter-city buses and coaches annually at its facility in Narasapura, Karnataka.
Currently the localization is 18 per cent for trucks and 100 per cent for bus bodies. Scania will also employ over 800 people at this facility within five years.

The facility will serve as company’s head office and center for all commercial operations across the country.
The operations will consist of final assembly of trucks with bodywork and building of complete coaches along with a service workshop and a central parts warehouse for timely service.

The Narasapura plant will house two manufacturing units – one for truck assembly and another for buses.
Scania started production of trucks at the new facility in Narasapura during June and production trials have started for mining and off-road trucks.
Production of on-road trucks will start soon and the bus rollout is planned for the first quarter of 2014.

Scania has invested Rs.250 crore to set up separate truck- and bus-making units on a 40-acre campus in the Narsapura industrial estate, its new country headquarters. The plant employs 198 persons. German automotive major Volkswagen is the largest shareholder in Scania.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the facility.

At a news conference later Mr. Lundstedt said, “We are here as long-term partners for the Indian transport sector.”

Also, the facility seems to be located very close to Volvo's.

Re: Scania inaugurates first manufacturing facility in India

Unlike Mercedes looks like Scania is more serious in its India operations. Right from the go they are going with 100% localization in bus body building. Now we have to see how they are going to price it in the market.
Initial reports suggests they may price it in around 2.3 crores. But I really doubt this pricing as these prices are meant to SVLL which are CBU and not to forget the DC touch which naturally bumped up the pricing. But I feel they will price it competitively as with the rest of the world where they are direct competitors to Volvo.
I just hope they don't repeat the mistake which Mercedes have committed.

SVLLs price is largely due to the DC mod (on "Con") job. Scania's price is to be
~5% +/- the rates of Volvo. And, a point to be noted that not all CBUs are expensive. The Scania is building their buses in Malaysia, which is a place included in the ASEAN Free Trade Zone, and hence they do not attract hefty levies on CBUs.

I wonder why Scania instead of showcasing Scania touring choose to introduce a bus which is one generation older.
Scania touring looks more matured and clearly distinguishes itself from likes of Mercedes Benz buses. I feel they should have fielded this against Volvo.

While Volvo is located in a place called Tavarekere, it is indeed close to Narasapura. But now Narasapura is slowly becoming a motor hub. Scania is located in this region whereas Volvo are separately located right next to the highway. The Narasapur Industrial area now is home to Honda motorcycles, Scania, Mahindra Aerospace and a lot of manufacturers are still arriving, along with their parts suppliers like Lumax, Bybre, Brembo, Exedy clutch who are following the manufacturer.

The scania facility has larger estate area compared to Volvo. Volvo started as a small unit which slowly expanded. Guess scania is one worthy competitor for volvo whereas mercedes did not really do much damage to Volvo.

BMTC is looking to purchase 200 AC buses to replace the aging Volvo's, this should be in contention.

I didn't get what the break up was for?
Is it low floors and semi-low floors?

It is called as two different tenders. One is for 200 buses under JnNURM funding, and the other is for 150 buses under state funding. (I might be wrong about the numbers - its possible that 150 is under JnNURM and 200 under state).
